The second season of 1923 ended in heartbreak, but for Julia Schlaepfer, who played the beloved Alexandra Dutton, her character’s fate was something she suspected all along. In an emotional interview with People, Schlaepfer opened up about filming Alex’s devastating final moments and how Yellowstone mastermind and the world’s busiest man, Taylor Sheridan, hinted early on that things might not end well for Spencer Dutton’s wife.

“Before we started filming season 1, when Taylor took us to dinner, I literally sat next to him and I was like, ‘I’m dying, aren’t I? Like, ‘I’m going to die.’”

Sheridan didn’t confirm it at the time, but he didn’t deny it either. “He told me, ‘I don’t know yet. You might not. I don’t know.’ I think he did have a couple different versions in his head. No one knew. No one knew for sure. I don’t even think he did for a long time.

Still, Schlaepfer said she always had a gut feeling that Alexandra’s tragic fate was written in the stars: “I had this feeling. I don’t know why. I think I just had a feeling that that’s how it would go.

What Happened In The ‘1923’ Finale?

The 1923 finale, “A Dream and a Memory,” saw Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) finally reunite with his wife after a grueling cross-country journey — only to lose her in the cruelest way possible. Having rescued her from near-death in the snow, Spencer stayed by her side in the hospital with their newborn son, John, but awoke to find her lifeless beside him.

I was super emotional,” Sklenar told People about filming the scene. “Especially when she actually dies… I was a f*cking mess. I mean, I’m a snotty crier, so it’s not pretty. It’s ugly, and there’s a lot of snot coming down, so it’s a whole thing.”

Schlaepfer added that Alex was aware of her fate before anyone else — and made peace with it. “I think she knows what the reality of her situation is. And I think also she makes a choice, you know? She makes a choice for her family and for her baby. And she’s going to spend the remaining minutes, seconds, hours of her life that she has making sure her baby stays alive, even if that means she doesn’t.”

“I know people are going to be so upset because she does suffer so much,” she added, “but you know, I think her ultimate sacrifice at the end, in giving her life, just shows how strong she is. I had to lay Alex to rest, and that’s going to stick with me for the rest of my life, for sure.”

The 1923 finale is now streaming on Paramount+.
