Rachel Zegler’s ‘Snow White’ Is One of the Highest-Grossing Musicals Ever Despite Fading Rotten Tomatoes Score

Snow White has fought back against the controversy and poor reviews to claim a spot on a new box office list. After three full weekends in theaters, Rachel Zegler’s live-action Disney adaptation has grossed $77 million at the domestic box office and $91 million internationally for a global total of $168 million. This $77 million domestic total is enough to make Snow White one of the top 40 highest-grossing musicals ever in the U.S. at #38, and it ranks even higher at the worldwide box office, sitting at #32. Snow White, which also stars Gal Gadot and was directed by Marc Webb, has had waves of negativity wash over the film since its debut, with IMDb even issuing a disclaimer for review bombing.
Snow White kicked off its box office run with the second-highest opening of the year at the time, with its $42 million debut trailing only the $88 million earned by Captain America: Brave New World. However, Snow White now sits in third in this category thanks to the recently-premiered Minecraft Movie, which opened with a colossal $162 million, the highest of any video game movie ever. It didn’t take Snow White long to lose its top spot at the box office either, as Jason Statham’s new action vehicle, A Working Man, dethroned Disney’s live-action adaptation during its second weekend in theaters. Snow White fell to the #4 spot this weekend behind both the aforementioned Minecraft and Jason Statham flicks while also earning a lower total than The Chosen: Last Supper — Part 2. The film sits at 40% from critics and 73% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
How Much Did ‘Snow White’ Cost To Make?
Disney’s live-action Snow White adaptation was produced on a reported budget of around $210 million. This would leave the film’s break-even point at a little over $400 million, as a general rule of thumb is that a movie needs to earn back twice its production cost to become a profit. The only silver lining is that Disney spent practically no money marketing Snow White, but that won’t stop it from ultimately finishing its theatrical run as a flop. Still, it will likely be some time before Disney adds Snow White to digital platforms and even longer before it begins streaming on Disney+.
Snow White is still playing in theaters everywhere. Stay tuned to Collider for more box office updates on the film and find tickets below for a showtime near you.
