The Old Country Release Date Leaks And It May Be Competing With GTA 6

The release date for Mafia: The Old Country, the latest installment in Hangar 13’s acclaimed open-world series, has seemingly leaked online. With so many major publishers and developers bracing for the announcement of GTA 6‘s release date, there’s a good chance the back end of 2025 will be sparsely populated with video game launches as everyone makes way for Rockstar. Fortunately, Mafia fans seemingly don’t need to worry about waiting too much longer as the supposed release is much sooner than expected.
According to reputable Take-Two Interactive leaker and insider videotechuk_ on X (formerly Twitter), a Spanish Steam post on Mafia: The Old Country’s official page included the launch date of August 8, 2025. At the time of writing, the post remains active and accessible, but the segment detailing the release date and platforms has been removed. While the more official capacity of this leak does lend some credence to its validity, it’s still recommended that players take it with a grain of salt; Launch dates have been known to shift based on various developmental factors.
Can Mafia: The Old Country Compete With GTA 6?
It’s Certainly A Bold Move
The Mafia franchise is a beloved open-world franchise that’s proven itself across a trilogy of highly-rated games, but one has to imagine that releasing in a similar window to GTA 6 is risky. Not only are both games vying for dominance in a similar genre, but the hype surrounding Rockstar’s latest project has already reached a fever pitch that will only increase as 2025’s third quarter approaches. The Old Country is generating some positive buzz, but the community’s excitement will always be dwarfed by the global anticipation for GTA 6.
It’s worth remembering that Mafia: The Old Country and Grand Theft Auto 6 are under the purview of Take-Two Interactive: The company owns both Rockstar and publisher 2K Games. Having both games release in the same period may be a way to dominate the market for a few weeks, ensuring that the two biggest titles of Q3 2025 are Take-Two products. One has to question the strategy, though, if there’s a high chance of GTA 6 cannibalizing Mafia’s sales.

The Old Country Looks Like Classic Open-World Fun
Inspired By The Gangster Movies Of Old
I’m interested to see how Mafia: The Old Country fares in the marketplace, especially since the franchise has somewhat grown in popularity since the release of the third game. Fans have waited nearly a decade to delve back into the world of organized crime, and setting the game in 1900s Sicily sounds like a fun way of presenting players with a familiar but unique experience. If the leak is accurate, I hope GTA 6 doesn’t completely overshadow The Old Country because it could be something very special.
