TLC Needs To Give ‘Sister Wives’ Christine and Janelle Brown Their Own Spinoff

The concept of Sister Wives was groundbreaking and controversial at the same time when the show first premiered in 2010. At the height of its popularity, the show gave an unfiltered look into the lives of Kody Brown and his four wives, Meri, Janelle, Christine, and Robyn Brown, along with all of their children. Sister Wives was an honest take on the complexities of living in a plural family and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. But the premiere of Sister Wives Season 19 in September 2024 marked the end of an era for the show.

With Kody’s first three wives choosing to leave him, the dynamics of Sister Wives shifted completely. The show was no longer about the polygamous Brown family but more about the aftermath of its destruction. With Robyn as Kody’s last-standing wife, the show tried to focus on their relationship following the departure of the other wives. On the other hand, it also followed Kody’s ex-wives as they settled into their own lives post-divorce. While all of that sounds like a natural progression of the show, in theory, it just doesn’t work! With the constant back-and-forth drama surrounding the divorces and Robyn’s constant fixation on the past, it feels like the show has been stuck in a miserable loop this entire season.

Christine and Janelle Brown Deserve To Tell Their Own Stories

For the entirety of Sister Wives, Kody’s former partners have been treated as footnotes in his narrative. But now that these two have stepped out of their toxic marriage to Kody, it’s not fair to keep reducing them to side characters in his and Robyn’s lives. The show is always going to center around the Brown family patriarch, which leaves little to no room for Christine and Janelle to tell their story. Instead of watching the imminent breakdown of Robyn and Kody’s marriage and the same-old arguments, fans of the show would rather watch a spinoff that revolves around Christine and Janelle’s new lives. With Christine marrying David Woolley and Janelle establishing herself as an entrepreneur, there’s so much that these two have to offer to reality TV.

Not to mention that Christine and Janelle have always been fan favorites, thanks to the genuine bond that they have developed with each other. Throughout their years on Sister Wives, it was evident that the two ladies were more than just sister wives. They were always there for each other and were able to maintain their relationship even in the face of Kody’s erratic behavior. There’s no denying that Christine and Janelle did have their share of arguments, but they never let that get in the way of their friendship.

The fact that they found each other to hold onto during the worst time in their marriage could lay the foundation for an entertaining spinoff. A show centered around Christine and Janelle could dive deep into why they chose to remain in each other’s lives after leaving Kody behind. With Christine’s unfiltered humor and Janelle’s raw honesty, these two could shed new light on what it means to find independence after years of living on someone else’s terms. And a spinoff wouldn’t keep dragging them through the same drama as the post-divorce form of Sister Wives does.

The Future of ‘Sister Wives’ Looks Pretty Bleak

After the breakdown of Kody Brown’s family, it’s evident that Sister Wives, in its current form, is just not working. The absence of the sister wives, the fundamental part of the story, has left the show feeling redundant and even irrelevant. It almost feels like Sister Wives is going through an identity crisis because it doesn’t know what to focus on anymore. Season 19 revolved around the fallout of Kody’s separation, and there’s only so much of it that the audience can take.

At this point, the viewers already know everything there is to know about how frustrated Kody and Robyn are after the departure of the other wives. There’s no point in bringing up the same topics again and again, especially when there’s no going back. Not to mention that they haven’t exactly been fan favorites. So, watching them romanticize what was an extremely toxic past for the rest of the sister wives is disrespectful. It’s not like they didn’t see any of this coming, with Kody’s constant partiality toward his youngest wife. The show doesn’t have anything fresh going for it anymore, and if the second half of Season 19 goes down the same route, a cancellation sounds like the best option to retain the legacy.

The Coyote Pass Redivision Is All The More Reason to Repurpose ‘Sister Wives’

After the dissolution of Kody’s first three marriages, the only thing linking his ex-wives to him was the Coyote Pass property dispute. A huge part of Season 19 also focused on the arguments surrounding the division of the property. But now that Kody has finally settled the matter and split the land fairly between the four ladies, there is nothing that links his ex-wives to him anymore. In a way, this feels like the end of an era. The audience also deserves to move on from the same old narrative to accept that no amount of reminiscing can fix Kody’s family anymore.

The Sister Wives the viewers once knew is gone with the Coyote Pass property. And as annoying as Kody and Robyn are, there’s no denying that they need a break to focus on themselves. Their drama has been at the center of the show for so long that it might have kept them from actually working through their issues.

Meri, on the other hand, has claimed that she no longer wants to be associated with her former sister wives. After years of enduring emotional neglect, Meri wants a fresh start, which definitely doesn’t include a return to reality TV for now. But despite all the turmoil, the emotional core of Sister Wives still deserves to stay alive. And that’s where Christine and Janelle come in! With fans always having been invested in their resilience, TLC needs to capitalize on its existing brand and give the ladies the respect and focus they deserve.
