‘A Minecraft Movie’ Passes the Half a Billion Mark at the Global Box Office

Just 10 days into its global run, Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie has already broken nearly every record that it could’ve. It’s the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025, having overtaken the lifetime haul of Captain America: Brave New World; it’s now also the second-biggest video game adaptation ever made, behind only The Super Mario Bros. Movie; and this weekend, it passed the massive half-billion mark at the global box office. Directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, A Minecraft Movie is quickly establishing itself as a phenomenon, and is earmarked to become the first American movie to pass the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide this year.
Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie has grossed an estimated $280 million domestically and $550 million worldwide. The movie has proven to be exceptionally popular among younger audiences, with dozens of videos depicting absolute mayhem in theaters being widely circulated online. This public adoration — the movie holds an 87% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes — has utterly silenced any negative response that may have been hurled its way by the critics. A Minecraft Movie is still languishing with a 46% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, by the way.
It was able to break Super Mario Bros.’ record in its debut weekend; that film concluded its run with around $570 million domestically and around $1.3 billion worldwide. These are the milestones that A Minecraft Movie would need to pass to become the biggest video game adaptation ever. This weekend, it zoomed past Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to claim the number two spot on the list; in its 10-day run, it was also able to surpass the lifetime global hauls of films such as Rampage, Warcraft, Uncharted, and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.
Warner Bros. Has Staged a Much-Needed Comeback
The film also serves as something of a life-saver for W.B., which has been struggling this year with two back-to-back under-performers — Mickey 17 and The Alto Knights. And even though it’s a stellar example of the IP-driven, franchise-minded tendencies of Hollywood, it’s output like this that enables studios to produce more challenging work. W.B. is gearing up to release director Ryan Coogler’s ambitious horror film Sinners in some days. Starring Michael B. Jordan, the film holds a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and is expected to draw huge crowds in its debut. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
