Squid Game will be ending in 2025, but this void could be filled with an exciting upcoming project from a renowned British filmmaker. The South Korean Squid Game introduced a lot of Western TV viewers to the joys of K-dramas, and its absence will be frustrating for many. After Squid Game season 3, it won’t be easy for other shows with similar premises to reach the same heights. Alice in Borderland is as entertaining, but it may not be the right kind of Squid Game follow-up for a lot of people.

Every game in Squid Game season 2 built up to a scarier situation than the last, proving that showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk had a far bigger plan than even season 1 demonstrated. With violent group games being a popular genre since the iconic Battle Royale in 2000, this concept grew exponentially, growing to include the wildly popular Hunger Games movies and, eventually, Squid Game. Despite Squid Game’s uniqueness in the dystopian battle royale genre, this immensely creative endeavor may have a worthy follow-up in Edgar Wright’s The Running Man remake.

The Running Man Remake Releases Shortly After Squid Game Ends & Has A Very Similar Premise

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man Could Satisfy Squid Game Fans

Edgar Wright is directing The Running Man, set to launch in November 2025, based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Considering how great Wright’s filmography, which includes the likes of Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead, has been, the expectations for his take on The Running Man couldn’t be higher. Squid Game’s postapocalyptic atmosphere and the idea of turning suffering and desperation into entertainment are elements that Wright’s version of The Running Man will likely include.

It Feels Like Edgar Wright’s The Running Man Will Be More Like Squid Game Than The Arnold Schwarzenegger Movie

Arnold Schwarzenegger Screaming in The Running Man

Paul Michael Glaser directed 1987’s The Running Man, which may be less suited to fans of Squid Game than the upcoming version of the movie. As the cliffhanger ending of Squid Game season 2 proved, the show wasn’t pulling any punches when it came to sadistic torture and gore. This tense and scary ambiance may well be glimpsed in Wright’s Running Man movie, though it wasn’t so much the order of the day in the 1987 picture. Starring María Conchita Alonso and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the original movie leaned into silliness successfully.

Although Schwarzenegger gleefully dispatched enemies the whole movie long, he did so hilariously, which isn’t quite the appeal of Squid Game. Wright has confirmed that his Running Man will be more faithful to its source material – a harrowing book by Stephen King – than the 1987 movie. In other words, Edgar Wright’s The Running Man may be closer to Squid Game than one would think if looking at the 1987 film only.
