Cate Blanchett Reveals Why She’s ‘Serious About Giving Up Acting’

Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has shared her thoughts on the possibility of retiring from acting. This comes after she had a busy year in 2024, where she delivered leading performances in Lionsgate’s live-action Borderlands movie, in Guy Maddin’s dark comedy movie Rumours, and in the Apple TV+ miniseries Disclaimer. The latter earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Film.
Cate Blanchett reflects on her acting career
During a recent interview, Blanchett revealed that she isn’t really planning to be an actor for a long time, confirming that, even though her retirement from acting is still far in the future, she won’t be having a hard time letting it go. While reflecting on her experience as a celebrity, the acclaimed actress explained that there are still a lot of things she would like to fulfill in life besides being an actor.
“My family roll their eyes every time I say it, but I mean it. I am serious about giving up acting. (There are) a lot of things I want to do with my life,” Blanchett shared. “When you go on a talk show, or even here now, and then you see soundbites of things you’ve said, pulled out and italicized, they sound really loud. I’m not that person. I make more sense in motion – it’s been a long time to remotely get comfortable with the idea of being photographed.”
She continued, “I’ve always felt like I’m on the periphery of things, so I’m always surprised when I belong anywhere. I go with curiosity into whatever environment that I’m in, not expecting to be accepted or welcomed. I’ve spent a lifetime getting comfortable with the feeling of being uncomfortable.”
Blanchett was most recently seen in Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller movie Black Bag, which currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. She will next be seen in the comedy-drama movie Father, Mother, Sister, Brother with Adam Driver and Vicky Krieps. She’s also currently in production for the sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang, in which she’ll be starring alongside Channing Tatum and Dave Bautista.
