Marvel Comics is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Gwen Stacy’s original “return” from the dead by delivering an over-the-top, madcap match-up between two different versions of Gwenpool, the Mutiversal variant who fuses infamous Merc With a Mouth Deadpool and Gwen, with the publisher confirming that the only person who can stop a villainous version of the character is a heroic version.

In an interview with Cavan Scott, the author promises to make all of this make sense with his upcoming Gwenpool series, which aims to take the tangled web the company has woven with Gwen Stacy over the past several years and play on it to produce an action-packed and emotionally resonant next chapter.

Gwen’s OG demise defined Spider-Man lore, and remains one of Marvel’s most impactful deaths, yet alternate versions of the character have had a rich history since then, and in a sense, Gwenpool is the pinnacle of that evolution.

Right from the jump, this new Gwenpool series promises to introduce the darkest version of Gwen Stacy in Marvel history, all while paying tribute to the long road the character has taken to get to this point. Author Cavan Scott noted in his conversation with CBR that the Multiversal, metafictional tone of previous Gwenpool stories set the precedent for this latest adventure, and further, that he steeped himself in Gwen-lore in order to prepare for this series, stating:

There’s also an element of asking ‘why now’ and ‘why her?’ Of course, it helps when you’re dealing with Gwenpool which, at its core, is a comic book about comic books and our relationship with the characters. That gave me the nugget I need, so I dove back into Gwenpool’s past, re-reading everything the original blistering run (still one of my favourite runs in comics) to West Coast Avengers, Infinity comics and beyond.

In other words, this is shaping up to be the next defining Marvel Universe moment for Gwen.

Is Gwen Stacy Dead or Alive? Over the Years, It’s Been Hard to Tell With Marvel

Gwen Stacy has had a complicated history in Marvel Comics, she’s been alive, then dead, then alive, and now Marvel announced she’s alive, again.

Introduced in 1965 as Peter Parker’s first true love, the original Gwen Stacy’s tenure in Spider-Man comics was actually relatively short, in retrospect, as she was killed off in 1973; in 1975, the character was infamously brought back to life, though this was eventually revealed to be a clone, inaugurating the history of duplicates and dopplegangers that would lead to Spidey’s much-debated “Clone Saga.” Subsequently, over the past decade, several Gwen variants, including Spider-Gwen and Gwenpool, have redefined the character’s place in Marvel Comics, and helped make her a vital part of the Universe moving forward.

For decades, Gwen Stacy’s defining moment was her death, and her role in Spider-Man canon was that of the tragic lost love; now, Gwen is perhaps one of Marvel’s most frequently revived and revitalized characters, having come back from beyond the grave a number of times, albeit in a variety of different forms and for different purposes in each case. Cavan Scott’s promise of a deadly new Gwenpool and a showdown between two versions of the character is just the latest thrilling move from Marvel to make Gwen Stacy one of the publisher’s most electrifying characters.
