Doctor Who recently returned with its second season. It unfolds the journey of the Doctor to bring back Belinda Chandra to Earth, which is interrupted by a mysterious force. While fans are hooked on the new season, they are curious about the absence of part 1’s main character, Ruby Sunday. So, why is Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday missing in Doctor Who Season 2?

Here is everything you need to know about the character’s departure in the second season of the sci-fi series.

Did Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday leave Doctor Who and why?

No, Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday did not leave Doctor Who.

As mentioned above, Season 2 focuses on the journey of the Doctor with Belinda Chandra. Fans were confused about Ruby’s absence, especially with the introduction of the Doctor’s new companion. For the unversed, in Season 1’s last episode, Ruby succeeded in finding her birth mother, who abandoned her at the Church on Ruby Road. She found out that her mother gave her up after giving birth at the young age of 15. Further, Ruby decided to stay with her family and stop traveling with the Doctor.

As such, Ruby’s character is currently absent in Season 2 while Belinda is seen travelling with the Doctor. Ruby’s absence led to fans speculating about her exit from the show, with Belinda taking over her role. However, the good news is Ruby hasn’t left the series yet. She will be back in Season 2 with a bang. In April 2024, Doctor Who’s official site confirmed that the titular character will have two traveling companions by his side that is Ruby and Belinda.

Additionally, showrunner Russell T. Davies cleared the air around Ruby’s exit. He told SFX magazine, “Not leaving. Not at all. We were ordered for two years of a series off Disney, and we’re delivering two years, and the Ruby Sunday story literally spans those two years.”

Davies also opened up on Ruby’s role in Season 2. He explained, “We are planning [to] shoot the [season 2] finale in which Ruby has the most magnificent scenes, and Millie.” The showrunner further added, “It’s some of your most challenging material yet, isn’t it? It will all make sense once you see it play out.”

Doctor Who is streaming on Disney Plus.
