Mad Max is one franchise that takes fans back to the wasteland unlike any other. Mad Max: Fury Road starring Charliez Theron as Furiosa and Tom Hardy as the titular Max, is the crown jewel of the franchise that exists on the periphery of old and new. The latest feature in the franchise, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, starring Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as big bad Dementus, did not have a similar impact but certainly invoked conversation about a long-planned feature, Mad Max: The Wasteland. Now Hardy has hinted that conversations around the project are happening.

The actor was speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about plans for a Venom and Spider-Man crossover that never happened but was at a point discussed but to no end as he wrapped up the Venom franchise before it could happen. “There are always talks, but that doesn’t mean that things manifested. There’s a future where these things will continue to be talked about until something is realized and I’m sure it will be at some point, but it just didn’t happen with me,” he then further divulged

Now there’s Mad Max: The Wasteland (laughs). There are lots of things that are discussed, but they haven’t happened yet.

What’s Happening with ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’?

Franchise director George Miller is a visionary and has endless stories to tell in this saga. As for The Wasteland he has previously hinted that the story will be about Max and a young mother as they navigate the vast Wasteland — probably linking back to the visions that Hardy’s character gets in Fury Road.

He previously gave a peak into the concept, revealing,“It certainly has a lot of action in it, but it is also a saga,” though he admits, “With the Wasteland, I’m still figuring out what to do with it.” The director, at the time, added that he’s waiting on the reception of the latest feature, “But I’m just simply waiting to see the reception of Furiosa, and if it all lines up we’ll go ahead with it.” Sadly, Furiosa did not impress the fans like the other entries in the franchise, grossing $174.3 million against its budget of $168 million. But despite bombing at the box office, the film has a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating and that’s probably the silver lining for the studio to have conversations about the project with Hardy’s involvement. Whether the talks lead to any kind of project remains to be seen. Keep your fingers crossed.

The Mad Max franchise is available to binge on Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
