Warner Bros. Television boss Channing Dungey has opened up about the Ted Lasso Season 4 renewal, revealing how the new installment came to be after nearly two years since wrapping up Season 3’s 12-episode run on Apple TV+. At the moment, Season 4 has no official release date yet, but production will reportedly begin this coming July.

“It’s really all been driven by Jason. The studio, Warner Bros, and Apple were very much open to doing more Ted Lasso but so much of it was about Jason feeling good about the prospects, comfortable with the idea,” Dungey shared in a recent interview. “It’s all coming from his creative brain, and we were fortunate enough to find ourselves in a place where he landed on an idea that he was excited about, and we are getting the opportunity to support him in that vision.”

When asked about the comedy’s future after Ted Lasso Season 4, Dungey teased that they’re indeed open for the possibility of Season 4 leading to another potential 3-season arc. However, she clarified that they haven’t had any conversations about the show’s future beyond the upcoming fourth installment.

“We’ve heard the pitch for this next season, for Season 4. Is there the opportunity for the story to continue after that? Absolutely. Have I heard a whole three-season pitch? Not yet,” Dungey said.

Season 4 will feature the return of Emmy winner Jason Sudeikis, who will officially be reprising his titular role as the beloved football coach of AFC Richmond. The next season will see Ted coaching a women’s football team. Besides Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift have also been tapped to return as Rebecca Walton, Roy Kent, and Leslie Higgins, respectively. As for Juno Temple and Brandon Hunt, according to Dungey, the creative team are “still in active conversations” with some of the previous cast members.

Ted Lasso follows an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team despite having no experience. Sudeikis first portrayed the character in 2013 as part of NBC Sports’ promotional videos. The series was developed by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly. It is executive produced by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Jeff Ingold, and Liza Katzer, with 30 Rock’s Jack Burditt.
