China, Elmer’s mother, gets hired by Sabela, a grieving mother who wants the woman behind her son’s death, Violeta, to disappear forever. When Violeta and Elmer accidentally meet, he begins to fall for Violeta, which puts a wrench in his plans seeing as he was supposed to murder her.

As Elmer and Violeta fall deeper in love, two police officers working in the Missing Persons department begin closing in on the assassin after he murders a man who harassed his girlfriend. China, on the other hand, hires a friend of hers to kill Violeta because their relationship caused a rift between her and her son. Instead of ending up dead, Violeta brutally murders the person who was supposed to end her. Before the Netflix original series comes to an end, Elmer helps Violeta get rid of the body.

Elmer Went Back To Being An Assassin

When Elmer was a child, he and his mother were in an accident that left the part of his brain that felt emotions damaged, while China lost her leg. Because of this, Elmer spent the majority of his life not feeling anything until he met Violeta. Before he and Violeta began their romance, the assassin was diagnosed with a brain tumor, but he refused to get it treated, something which became a point of contention between Elmer and China.

In the last episode of the psychological thriller, China hired Orson to get rid of Violeta so she could have her son back. Violeta won the fight between her and Orson after bludgeoning him to death. With a dead body she had no idea what to do with, she called Elmer, who helped her get rid of it. After Violeta left, Elmer began to see his mother for who she really was. He confronted China, letting her know he was no longer going to participate in murdering people for money.

Just as Elmer was leaving, his mother hit him on the head and took him to the hospital where he underwent surgery to remove his tumor. When Elmer healed, he once again lost the ability to feel emotions. But this time, he quit being an assassin and focused on his gardening instead. For Elmer, what his mother had done to him was unforgivable, and he could no longer trust her to have his best interests at heart. She not only nearly had the only woman he had ever loved murdered, but she was using him to make money.

Meeting Violeta had irrevocably changed Elmer because she was the proof that it was possible for him to fall in love. Their relationship, however, was filled with ups and downs, since Elmer didn’t particularly know how to have boundaries, and could come off as being intense. When the couple broke up, Elmer nursed his hurt feelings while Violeta went on to live her life. But in the end, Violeta missed Elmer, and they got back together.

However, Violeta was also a killer, so there was a part of her that understood her ex-boyfriend.

Their relationship faced another hurdle when Elmer killed Sabela. At this point, Violeta knew that he was behind the murder of not only Sabela, but Mon as well. When Elmer told Violeta all he had done and the people he had killed, she decided to leave him and move out of the city. In a way, seeing as Violeta found out that Elmer was a killer for hire, it makes sense that she didn’t want to continue with their relationship. However, Violeta was also a killer, so there was a part of her that understood her ex-boyfriend.

Elmer And China Didn’t Face Any Consequences For Their Actions

For years, China and Elmer had managed to keep the police from discovering that they were the ones who were behind most of the missing persons cases in their city. That changed when detectives Torres and Carrera began looking into the disappearance of Mon, a man who Elmer had killed. Elmer was meticulous when it came to making people disappear because he spent months planning before he killed them. But he made a mistake with Mon and left a clue at the crime scene because he was an impulsive kill.

After questioning Violeta, who led the police officers to Elmer, Detective Carrera was sure that something was going on but had no way of proving it. As she continued investigating and looking into old missing persons cases, she came to the conclusion that Elmer and China were the murderers after she saw the widow of one of their clients visit their plant store. Although the detective was right, she had no way of tying Elmer to any of the crime scenes.

Instead of waiting for her partner, Detective Carrera went to Elmer’s garden and discovered that the plants had strange highlights, which signaled to having dead bodies buried underneath them. The detective, however, didn’t know that China had seen her in the garden. So when she went over with her team to start digging, she found that China had already removed the bodies, which meant that they couldn’t be arrested because there was no proof that they had committed a crime. Although the police officer didn’t find any evidence or arrest Elmer and China, she vowed to keep looking.

The Gardener Season 1 Ended On A Cliffhanger

The Gardener concluded with Elmer and China not ending up behind bars. With Detective Carrera determined to catch the two, the finale of The Gardener perfectly sets up season 2. Since Violeta returned in the final scenes of the crime drama and asked Elmer if he could murder someone, this points to the fact that he is back to his old ways, even though he has said that he was done with that life. There are several questions that weren’t answered in The Gardener season 1 such as who Violeta wants killed and if Elmer and China will get arrested.

The Gardener Is A Story About Love Gone Wrong

The Gardener‘s ending highlighted several things. While China’s goal was to protect Elmer, she went about it the wrong way which ended up with her driving her son further away. Instead of letting Elmer learn to love another person, all China did was set him up for heartbreak. Elmer, on the other hand, was thrilled to fall in love, but his inability to regulate his emotions caused him to think that love was pain. Essentially, the conclusion of The Gardener is about a mother who held onto her son too tightly and consequently hurt him.
