The Harry Potter Remake’s New Filch Actor Was Already In The Movies, But You Probably Don’t Remember Him

We were just hit with major news for the Harry Potter TV show with several stars confirmed, and one of them actually constitutes an interesting bit of trivia. Since its announcement, HBO’s Harry Potter reboot has faced immense pressure and scrutiny when it comes to how it will inevitably be compared to the previous movies, especially the legendary cast that included flawless performances by Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Ralph Fiennes, and many more. Now, the fandom is abuzz with six new Harry Potter actors being confirmed, all playing members of Hogwarts’ staff.
This includes the confirmation of two long-rumored castings, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape. However, a few other Harry Potter characters who have not received nearly as much speculation as more important players in the overarching story were also announced, and as seen in the movies, all play a significant role in bringing the rich world to life. In the case of one notably detested character, the cast actor has previously provided sharp beats while playing only minor characters.
Paul Whitehouse Will Play Argus Filch In The Harry Potter Remake – Where You’ve Seen Him
Whitehouse Is A Comedian By Trade With A Few Traditional Acting Credits
Paul Whitehouse, the actor announced to be playing Hogwarts’ grumpy caretaker Argus Filch, is best known for his comedy work. He has starred in various sketch comedy shows, including The Fast Show, Harry & Paul, and Harry Enfield & Chums. People who have not much explored this entertainment niche have still likely seen him in one of a few mainstream projects. Whitehouse appeared alongside icons such as Michael Caine and Steve Buscemi in some live-action movies and provided the voices of a supporting character in Corpse Bride and the March Hare in Disney’s live-action Alice in Wonderland movies.
Harry Potter’s New Filch Actor Was In The Movies As A Much More Minor Character
Most Of Sir Cadogan’s Scenes Were Deleted From The Third Harry Potter Movie
Ironically, Whitehouse has appeared in the Harry Potter franchise before, as Sir Cadogan, the stumbling and overly showy knight in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Cadogan is one of the living portraits in the Hogwarts castle; following Sirius attacking the Fat Lady’s portrait trying to get into the Gryffindor common room, Cadogan briefly fills in for her as the guardian of the house’s dormitories. He generally annoys everyone by constantly changing the password and is fired from the position after he lets Sirius into the tower (who did manage to acquire the password, in this instance).

Recent updates suggest the Harry Potter show is now working on casting Voldemort, also implying a shift from how he was depicted in the movies.
Most of this did not make it into the movie adaptation, where there is no official follow-up about the Fat Lady after she was attacked. There are a couple of deleted scenes that feature Whitehouse more prominently, showing him interacting with the students outside Gryffindor Tower and confirming to McGonagall that Sirius had made it into the common room. Although it is an interesting plot point in the book, deleting it was in favor of keeping the runtime and pacing of the movie reasonable — at least now, Paul Whitehouse has another turn with Harry Potter.
