Netflix’s new sitcom, North of North has a bittersweet ending that leaves the door wide open for season 2. The story begins as main character Siaja is about to make some major changes in her life. On the surface, Siaja is living the perfect life for her community, married to the “village superstar,” and raising a sweet young daughter. However, her husband, Ting, is manipulative and cruel, and the first episode ends with Siaja leaving him. The show is mostly lighthearted, but as the story progresses, North of North begins to explore darker themes.

Siaja contends with cultural norms and judgment from other members of her community while setting up her new life. Siaja gets a job by making herself indispensable to Helen, the town manager. She gets to know her previously absent father, temporarily moves in with her mother, and finds herself falling for a new resident in town. North of North ends with a party and a celebration of the town of Ice Cove, but touches on some dark subjects. Siaja’s mother reveals a painful secret, and a new arrival brings uncertainty for both Ice Cove and for Siaja.

Neevee’s Secret Daughter Explained

A Historical Wrong Is Central To Understanding Neevee

Maika Harper Neevee North of North

Neevee is one of the most complex characters in North of North. She is a recovering alcoholic, and Siaja explains that she often felt like the parent rather than the daughter. Neevee is prickly and antagonistic when she feels that Alistair is getting too close to her and Siaja. The reason for this is revealed in the final episode, when Neevee tells Siaja that she had another daughter, whose father stole her. Siaja prioritizes comforting Neevee, but it is likely that a future season of North of North could focus on finding her sister.

Anna Lambe (Siaja) is a Nunavut native, and she will be in the cast of Brad Pitt’s upcoming action movie Heart of the Beast.

Most of the actors in North of North are of Indigenous Inuk heritage, and the show has been praised for its accurate representation of the Inuk community. Many of the Indigenous communities in Canada were forced into residential schools – government-sponsored religious schools created to make Indigenous children adopt the Euro-Canadian culture. This is often referenced in Indigenous movies from North America, and while it is far from being the main focus of the show, it informs many of Neevee’s actions. One of the most powerful moments in North of North shows Neevee bonding with an elder about their background.

Do Siaja & Ting Make Up?

Ting May Become A Villain In A Future Season Of North Of North

During the penultimate episode, Ting has an accident, prompting a search and rescue effort to find Ice Cove’s most popular resident. After it appears that he had an epiphany while lost and injured, he and Siaja sleep together once more, which she immediately regrets. Ting soon reverts to his old ways, and the two resolve to co-parent Bun, but the relationship is still prickly between the two. In the final episode of North of North, it looks as though Siaja has resolved to move on, though there is still room for future conflict.

Ting is one of the best-written characters in a show full of great characters.

When Siaja first describes Ting, he appears to be more of a “himbo” archetype, who makes her feel inadequate by being good at everything. It soon becomes clear that there is a far nastier side to Ting, who belittles her, berates her for falling off the boat during a seal hunt, and tries to force her to adopt a child without asking her at all. Ting is one of the best-written characters in a show full of interesting characters, and it is possible that a later season of North of North could make him more of a villain.

Why Siaja & Kuuk Are Still Hiding Their Feelings

Kuuk’s Girlfriend Decided To Stay In Ice Cove

Over the eight episodes of North of North, Siaja and Kuuk bond over games of chess. Though it is clear that they make an excellent team, both appear to be newly out of complicated relationships and reluctant to confess their feelings out loud. In the episode “Carnivores,” Siaja is ready to tell Kuuk how she feels, but is shocked when his girlfriend, Alexis, arrives. In the final episode, Kuuk tells Siaja that both he and Alexis will be staying in Ice Cove. The two clearly have feelings for each other but never find the right time to say so.

As Netflix’s release calendar for 2025 gradually takes shape, there are plenty of popular returning shows and exciting new series in store.

Alexis appears to work as an influencer, and describes herself as a brand ambassador. She appears friendly and tries to help comfort Siaja when Ting goes missing, but the ending of North of North sets up a conflict between the two women. Alexis has taken a job working with Helen and Siaja, and describes the town of Ice Cove as “the perfect blank slate where she can “really optimize the way things run.” With North of North showing the pain that colonialism has caused, this feels very ominous and Siaja’s reaction is not positive.

What Alistair Means When He Tells Neevee He’s Sticking Around “For Them”

Neevee’s First Baby Is Not Alistair’s

For most of North of North, it looked as though Neevee and Alistair were going to patch up their relationship. Bun and Alistair got on well, and after a very awkward meeting, he and Siaja began to spend time together. Alistair still does not know Neevee’s secret, and so he cannot understand why she sabotages her relationship with him. The final straw comes when the two argue and she sleeps with another man, with Alistair accepting that the relationship is over. When he tells Neevee that he will be staying in Ice Cove “for them,” he means Siaja and Bun.

The secret may come out in a later season if Siaja enlists Alistair’s help to track her sister down.

When Alistair expresses his wish to know his daughter better, Neevee is furious, telling him that Siaja doesn’t belong to a white man. Her reaction seems extreme, but it is given context when the finale of North of North reveals the fate of Neevee’s previous daughter. Neevee had her first baby before meeting Alistair, but her visceral reaction to the idea of losing another daughter to a white man is understandable when taken into context. The secret may come out in a later season if Siaja enlists Alistair’s help to track her sister down.

How North Of North’s Ending Sets Up Big Changes For Ice Cove In Season 2

Will North Of North Get A Season 2?

North of North is set in the fictional town of Ice Cove, which Siaja loves, and she spends most of the show trying to make it a better place. Siaja volunteers to collect the trash, tries to make Elders’ Night more interesting, and helps to promote the town in the hope of having a research station set up there. While Ice Cove does not get its research station, the show ends with a smaller outpost being planned. This will come with changes, with both Alistair and Kuuk living in Ice Cove, and Alexis working in the town hall.
