The Fate of Peacock’s ‘Based on a True Story’ Has Been Decided

Peacock has officially reached the bookend for its series, Based on a True Story, as Variety reports the streamer has slapped the title with a cancellation. The second season came out all the way back in November, so fans have been waiting months for the final verdict, but it’s not the one they were hoping for. The news is a bit shocking as both seasons of the Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina-led dark comedy drama performed well with audiences and critics alike, earning positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings. Showing potential for growth, the second season even added 7 points to its score on the online platform, moving from a Season 1 76% critics’ approval rating to Season 2’s 83%. Still, for one reason or another, NBCUniversal’s streamer decided to close the book and move on from Based on a True Story.
Who among us hasn’t — at one time or another over the last several years — found ourselves completely engulfed in a true crime podcast or docuseries? Using that universal experience as its foundation, Based on a True Story centers around married couple Ava (Cuoco) and Nate Bartlett (Messina), who, when we first meet them, are preparing to welcome their first child into the world. A real estate agent by trade, Ava has a deep obsession with true crime, while Nathan is finding his place in life as a tennis coach after a debilitating knee injury took him out of the pros. During the first episode, the pair find themselves investigating a murder that they believe a mutual friend committed, leading them down a twisted rabbit hole of dangerous secrets that keep audiences guessing until the season finale.
The series quickly gained popularity with fans, a lot of whom saw much of themselves in Cuoco’s true crime junkie character. Blending dark comedy with a thrilling plotline, folks were hooked from the start, putting the title on par with other similar pieces of content like Only Murders in the Building. It wasn’t long after the first season’s run that Based on a True Story was picked up for a second season, so it certainly rang some alarm bells as the months rolled on without any news on a third.
Who Else Was In ‘Based on a True Story’?
In addition to leading stars Cuoco and Messina, the series also featured a cast that included (over its two seasons) Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, Lizze Broadway, Priscilla Quintana, Natalia Dyer, and more. The title hailed from creator Craig Rosenberg, who fans of The Boys and Gen V will recognize as a frequent writer and producer on the blood-filled Prime Video series.
Both seasons of Based on a True Story are now streaming on Peacock.
