With franchises like Final Destination and I Know What You Did Last Summer celebrating big comebacks this summer, along with new standalones including Weapons and Together, this summer is going to be a remarkable one for horror fans. Yet, there is another title that plans to take the crown of the scariest film of not just the summer but the entire year — Danny and Michael Philippou’s Bring Her Back. Anyone who saw the brothers’ debut feature-length project, Talk to Me, will know that the pair means business, and they’re certainly following up the crowdpleaser that no one saw coming with something just as — and maybe even more — terrifying. Today, Collider is thrilled to debut the very first official image to come from the world’s new horror obsession, set to arrive in cinemas on May 30.

Our debut look gets viewers up close and personal with Sweet Tooth alum Jonah Wren Phillips. In Bring Her Back, the actor plays one of the main characters, a boy named Oliver, who is reeling from the loss of his family. The image shows Oliver in a loosely fitted tank top, standing outside a large locked door that appears to be smudged with bloody handprints. But the boy isn’t looking at the symbol, and instead has his head turned to the side, looking off to his left. From what we’ve seen in the trailers, Oliver largely keeps to himself, remaining silent while the other characters talk and exist around him. Instead, he holds his emotions and voice in his eyes and facial expressions — something that can clearly be seen in this shot.

Joining Phillips in Bring Her Back is a lineup of talented performers that also includes two-time Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Billy Barratt (Kraven the Hunter), Sally-Anne Upton (Wentworth), Sora Wong, and more. Proving to be the perfect collaboratory fit after working together on Talk to Me, the Philippou siblings re-teamed with indie studio A24 for their highly anticipated follow-up.

With Talk to Me, the creative brothers allowed audiences to cross over to the other side thanks to a mysterious embalmed hand, which turned out to be a killer crowd pleaser at parties. On the heels of that project, the duo has returned to their shared fascination with a realm beyond our own with Bring Her Back. The movie centers around two teenage siblings who, after losing their parents, are sent to live with a foster mother. But, they quickly realize that something is up with their caretaker, who seems to have quite an obsession with tapping into the world of the dead.

Judging by their track record, we have pretty high hopes for the Philippou’s upcoming production. Talk to Me was a breakaway hit when it arrived in cinemas back in 2023, quickly taking critics and audiences by surprise. While we may not be as surprised when Bring Her Back turns into a massive overnight hit, we’re sure the directorial duo has plenty of tricks and treats up their sleeves.
