‘A Minecraft Movie’ Builds Its Way to a Massive Box Office Milestone

Now in its third week of release in theaters worldwide, A Minecraft Movie is set to compete directly with another Warner Bros. film, director Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Both movies are expected to generate over $40 million apiece this weekend, with Sinners looking to blow past projections and deliver around $50 million in its first three days of release. That being said, A Minecraft Movie remains the biggest Hollywood hit of the year, and after grossing $6.5 million on its third Thursday, it became the first Hollywood film of the year to pass the $300 million mark domestically.
The film’s running domestic total now stands at $303 million, after it generated over $100 million in its second week in theaters. Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie grossed $163 million in its opening weekend, beating the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Barbie. It’s currently the second-biggest video game adaptation in history, behind Super Mario Bros., which crossed the $300 million mark three days sooner than A Minecraft Movie did. On the global charts, A Minecraft Movie will potentially pass the $700 million mark this weekend.
Domestically, it was able to overtake a trio of franchise pictures in one fell swoop. On Thursday, A Minecraft Movie overtook The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In the last day or two, A Minecraft Movie has also surpassed the lifetime domestic hauls of W.B. hits such as Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Inception. The movie holds a “rotten” 47% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, but its success can largely be attributed to the excellent audience reception that it opened to. It’s currently sitting at an 87% audience score on the platform.
‘A Minecraft Movie’ Has Benefited the Careers of Everybody Involved
Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie features Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the central roles. Both stars have been able to achieve major box office goals thanks to the film’s phenomenal performance. Black’s movies have generated a combined total of over $10 billion worldwide, while Momoa’s films have grossed over $5 billion collectively. To become the biggest video game adaptation of all time, A Minecraft Movie needs to overtake Super Mario Bros.‘ $574 million domestic haul and $1.3 billion global haul. Stay tuned to Collider to find out if that happens.
