Doechii Pays Homage to “Coven Music Session” in New “Anxiety” Music Video

Grammy-winning rapper Doechii finally dropped the music video for “Anxiety” on April 18, 2025, more than a month after the single hit streaming platforms. Directed by James Mackle for Adele Drive, the video follows the artist as she is caught in a surreal, anxiety-fueled hell loop. Doechii is tossed, dragged, and flung through her trembling house as everything spirals out of control. From a stove bursting into flames to almost stepping into cracks on the wooden floor, and even a random elephant appearing outside, every bizarre moment is a physical manifestation of her anxiety.
Fans of Doechii might immediately recognize the opening scene as a nod to her now iconic Coven Music Session video, originally uploaded on May 15, 2020. The set is styled like the bedroom where she performed “Anxiety” almost five years ago. Viewers may also catch a clever reference to Gotye’s music video for “Somebody That I Used to Know,” where Gotye and Kimbra appear nude with their skin gradually painted — a fitting homage, considering Doechii’s “Anxiety” samples that very track.
Although Doechii made a name for herself with her critically acclaimed 2024 mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal”, it was the re-release of her 2019 track “Anxiety” that further cemented her place in social media culture. The single reached number one in Australia, Latvia, Greece, Switzerland, and New Zealand, and managed to break into the top ten of the charts in several other countries. The song’s unexpected virality on TikTok sparked a surge in popularity, eventually leading to a dance challenge inspired by Will Smith and Tatyana Ali’s iconic routine from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
