Jason Momoa’s A Minecraft Movie Role Is A Ridiculously Fantastic Follow-Up To His $7 Billion Franchise Movie Villain From 2 Years Ago

Jason Momoa delivers a super campy performance in A Minecraft Movie, which honestly doesn’t surprise me at all because of his role in this major blockbuster from 2023. When a Minecraft film was first announced all the way back in 2014, I never would’ve guessed that Momoa would star in it. Even after he became a major movie star thanks to films like Justice League and Aquaman, I still thought he was such an absurd choice to join the cast of A Minecraft Movie.
Thankfully, he proved me wrong. Even though reviews for A Minecraft Movie are quite mixed, several critics have praised Momoa’s comedic performance in the film. Momoa is involved in many of the funniest moments in A Minecraft Movie, and has further proven that he is a major box office draw. As of this writing, A Minecraft Movie has grossed $565 million at the worldwide box office (via Box Office Mojo), and will likely pass Fast X soon, which is another film in which Momoa delivers a campy performance.
Jason Momoa’s A Minecraft Movie & Fast X Characters Prove How Brilliant He Is At Playing Hilarious Campy Characters
Momoa Has Been Showing A Funnier Side Of Himself Lately
For years, Momoa had a reputation for playing intimidating characters with not a lot of personality. This is especially evident in Khal Drogo, his Game of Thrones character, which served as his breakout role. While Aquaman eventually got more silly in the DC Extended Universe, he was also quite serious at first. Therefore, when Momoa was cast in 2023’s Fast X, many people understandably believed he would be playing an ultra-serious, imposing villain. Thankfully, this couldn’t have been further from the truth.

Despite wanting revenge against Dom and his crew, Momoa’s Fast X character, Dante, is super silly. Momoa goes all in on camp, which has actually made Dante one of the best villains in the Fast & Furious franchise. Now, two years later, Momoa plays yet another campy character in A Minecraft Movie. These two roles completely subvert the type of character that Momoa would consistently play early in his career. While they may not be his most widely acclaimed roles, Momoa is so entertaining to watch in both of the films.
A Minecraft Movie’s Sequel & Fast 11 Set Up Jason Momoa To Continue His Impressive Franchise Box Office Success
Several Of Momoa’s Upcoming Movies Will Likely Be Huge Successes
Even if his roles in A Minecraft Movie and Fast X aren’t characters who typically garner immense critical acclaim, both of these films are huge box office successes, which means that Momoa is clearly doing something right. Throughout his career, Momoa has starred in many movies that have been huge hits at the box office, such as Aquaman, Dune, Fast X, and now A Minecraft Movie. Therefore, he is clearly choosing roles that are part of films that will attract huge audiences.

A Minecraft Movie may not have been as critically acclaimed as many fans were hoping, but it still features two fun comedy performances.
After A Minecraft Movie, it doesn’t seem like Momoa’s box office luck will run out anytime soon. While a sequel to A Minecraft Movie has not been officially confirmed, it is very likely, and it’s possible that Momoa will return. Additionally, he will also return in Fast & Furious 11, which will be the final movie in the long-running franchise. A sequel to A Minecraft Movie, Fast & Furious 11, and even Supergirl, which will see him play Lobo, a new DC character, prove that Momoa will have a very successful next few years at the box office.
