The fifth season of the television series The Chosen, which is currently being screened theatrically in three installments, witnessed a bit of an anticlimax on Easter weekend. Released as The Chosen: Last Supper by Fathom Entertainment, the fifth season is now the series’ highest-grossing chapter, having passed the $40 million combined domestic box office haul of Season 4. Its current combined total stands at over $43 million, while the franchise’s total haul passed the $110 million mark some days ago. However, the trilogy faced tough competition in the form of the animated film The King of Kings this past week, as it appeared to lose steam.

The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1 has generated over $20 million in over two weeks of release, making it the highest-grossing installment of not only Season 5, but the franchise as a whole. Released a week later, The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2 has made a total of $12 million so far, while The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3, which debuted last week, has made over $11 million. This past weekend saw a rather unusual scenario, with all three installments competing for real estate in theaters. These aren’t short “movies;” they clock in at around three hours each. This may also bode well for other television shows looking at potential theatrical releases, including the upcoming second season of Andor.

But like most faith-based projects, they’ve succeeded in appealing to a devoted, and some would argue, underserved fan base. The first and second installments of the Last Supper trilogy continue to hold near-perfect 99% audience scores on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Last Supper – Part 3 recently saw its audience score drop to 98% — it’s low for the series, but it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that other studios and filmmakers would love for their projects to be embraced this wholeheartedly.

‘The King of Kings’ Took the Crown at Easter

Spearheaded by series creator Dallas Jenkins, The Last Supper trilogy began its theatrical journey with another faith-based film already in theaters. The unrelated film The Last Supper, starring Jamie Ward as Jesus and Robert Knepper as Judas, concluded its theatrical run with an underwhelming $6.5 million. Meanwhile, The King of Kings exceeded expectations again with over $17 million in its second weekend, all thanks to an excellent 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has made $45 million so far.

You can watch both The King of Kings and The Chosen: Last Supper in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
