‘Snow White’ Stalls at Global Box Office as Rotten Tomatoes Score Plummets Further

After a tremendous return to form last year, when the combined total of its movies passed the $5 billion mark worldwide, Disney has had a difficult start to 2025. Captain America: Brave New World under-performed at the box office, grossing just over $400 million worldwide and falling short of its two predecessors. And not too long afterward, the mega-budget Snow White remake fared even worse. The movie is yet to hit the $100 million mark domestically and the $200 million mark worldwide, having pretty much reached the end of its rope.
With around $85 million domestically so far, Snow White has next to no chance of hitting the $100 million mark. The film’s overseas haul also seems to have plateaued at a little over $100 million, for a cumulative global haul of under $185 million. Does it have what it takes to pass the $200 million mark worldwide? Only time will tell. But it’s clear now that Disney massively miscalculated the original animated film’s appeal, especially in an era where A Minecraft Movie is able to gross twice Snow White’s lifetime domestic haul in its opening weekend alone.
To make matters worse, the studio has seemingly allowed the film’s headlining star Rachel Zegler to be unfairly targeted by trolls for her pro-Palestine comments. Snow White didn’t flop because Zegler took a moral stand on the ongoing war, but because it failed to appeal to audiences. Disney reportedly spent over $250 million on it, which means that it’ll probably lose hundreds of millions on the movie. Directed by Marc Webb, who previously directed the two Andrew Garfield Spider-Man films and (500) Days of Summer, Snow White earned mediocre reviews.
Where Does Disney’s Streak of Live-Action Remakes Go From Here?
The movie’s approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes has dropped to 39%, with criticism being directed at Gal Gadot’s performance as the Evil Queen. Disney has been having a rather uneven time with its streak of live-action remakes, with The Little Mermaid and Dumbo failing to break out quite like Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast did some years prior. More recently, Mufasa: The Lion King bounced back after a soft debut last year, but it can’t exactly be classified as a live-action remake at all. You can still watch Snow White in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
