Iyanla Vanzant Could Save ‘Married at First Sight’

Married at First Sight‘s experts are not always right. In fact, many of the couples they pair up simply don’t make it. But hey, that’s part of the Married at First Sight experiment. With eighteen American seasons under its belt, Married at First Sight is in need of some saving. Perhaps viewers enjoy witnessing potential train wrecks unfold before their eyes, but surely the participants might not appreciate having their match turn into a complete disaster. It might be time for a celebrated expert to enter the fray to save the series, and she goes by the name of Iyanla Vanzant.
For the uninitiated, Iyanla Vanzant is a multi-hyphenated inspirational speaker and life coach. She’s known for her appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She hosted her own eponymous talk show. And she hosted Iyanla: Fix My Life on OWN for ten seasons. Based simply on the title of that series, she might be the right person to fix this show. So why, of all the brilliant minds out there, is Iyanla the right person for this job? She actually knows what she’s talking about!
Iyanla Vanzant Has Fixed Many Needing Fixing
Based solely on her background in the self-help world, her star has risen steadily throughout her decades of work. Whether she’s been alongside Oprah, expressed her views through her best-selling books, or appeared on Watch What Happens Live to help Bravolebrities solve their life problems, Iyanla can solve it all. During her run on Iyanla: Fix My Life, she has had some memorable guests, including famous faces whom she has helped guide. Whether it’s problematic former NFL star Terrell Owens, Chris Brown‘s ex Karrueche Tran, or reality stars Sherée Whitfield, Cynthia Bailey, or The Braxton sisters, Iyanla’s ability to work with any type of personality is crucial to her work as a life coach.
While she may not be on TV since the end of her OWN show, the spiritual life coach has had the chance to share her wisdom through her podcast, The R Spot: The Relationship Zone. As the show states, her “live sessions to help inspire, grow, and guide them and other listeners to ‘do the work’ toward healing.” With over 100 episodes dedicated to love and relationships, it’s been an accessible program that has allowed listeners to grow and learn in this specific realm. As she told Shondaland, her series’ producer, “I hope it at least gives us a greater appreciation for the importance of relationships in our lives — our relationship with ourselves is the first one, and then how that informs and structures and impacts every other relationship. As this season ends, and we prepare for the next, my hope is that people have a deeper appreciation of the value and importance of relationships and have a greater desire to heal them.”

‘Married at First Sight’ Needs Iyanla Vanzant
When it comes to reality dating shows, Iyanla Vanzant has participated as a guest on After Happily Ever After. The BET series watched as they posed the question: can your ex find your next? The slightly twisted series tasked the contestant’s exes to find them their next love. For her part, she came as a guest, where she literally came to the rescue. Her presence was intended to help the former couples navigate unresolved issues from the past, allowing everyone to move forward. While the show was a bit of a disaster, her time proved that perhaps she could move over to another reality show to serve a stronger purpose.
What Iyanla can bring to Married at First Sight is the openness of having those hard conversations. It’s part of what made her an icon in the industry. She’s gutsy. She’s honest. She’s willing to make others do the hard work. Not that the experts on Married at First Sight don’t push the participants to difficult places, it’s just not working as it currently stands. Iyanla is a strong judge of character. She will keep it one hundred with the MAFS. Her ability to assist individuals to open up could be crucial. Now, would it expose that maybe none of the participants should be on the show? It’s very likely. But it means she’s good at what she does! Unfortunately, as much as we can dream of this potential reality, the likelihood that Iyanla Vanzant would want to go down with a sinking ship is highly unlikely. As she infamously once said, “Not on my watch!”
