Seven years after the two-season The X-Files revival ended on Fox, the highly anticipated reboot of the iconic science-fiction drama is gathering pace. After months of speculation and cryptic industry whispers, Ryan Coogler has spoken up about his new project. The man behind Black Panther and Creed, and most recently Sinners, is applying his distinct cinematic swagger to one of television’s most enduring cult classics. And if you thought Coogler was coming in to play it safe, think again. Speaking on Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler said of the reboot:

“I’m working on X-Files, bro. That’s what’s immediately next. I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f***ing scary. We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”

Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files aired from 1993 to 2002, and spawned multiple films and revival seasons. The series starred Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as FBI Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, who are tasked with investigating cases of the paranormal. Mulder is a skilled criminal profiler and conspiracy theorist who believes in the existence of the paranormal, whereas Scully is a medical doctor and skeptic who has been assigned to scientifically analyze Mulder’s case files. Carter has publicly endorsed the reboot, saying he was honored that Coogler deemed it necessary to speak to him about the project. He said, “I’m honored that they came to me and asked me, not for my permission, but my blessing.”

Coogler also revealed that he has been in touch with Anderson, who played Scully on the series for its 11-season run on Fox, about the possibility of reprising her role: “I’ve spoken to the great Gillian Anderson. She’s amazing. She’s incredible. You know, fingers crossed there.” Sometime last year, Anderson admitted for the first time that she may be tempted to return to the role of Dana Scully in the proposed reboot of the show. A much-loved figure by fans of The X-Files, the prospect of having Anderson back in some form will excite fans and boost the chances of the new production becoming a hit. “There’s a chance it will happen,” Anderson said at the time, “whether I am involved is a whole other thing, but in his (Coogler’s) hands, I am not saying no, because I think he’s really cool. And I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well, and maybe I’ll pop in for a little somethin’ somethin’.”

While no official cast announcements have been made, Carter previously revealed that Coogler intends to use a “diverse cast” to bring his creative direction to fruition. With the director now confirming he’s focusing on The X-Files reboot as his next project, more details are to be expected soon. As always, stay tuned for future updates.
