Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Bailey’s (Jenna Dewan) quest to expand their family through adoption might not have the happy ending they or the viewers expected. Following various meetings with social services in The Rookie Season 7, the couple learned that they were not suitable candidates for adoption. Their dangerous lives were not conducive to adopting a child, the social worker told them. The Rookie’s showrunner, Alexi Hawley, confirmed to Screen Rant that the show was done with the arc. “I think it has [come to an end]. I think that’s a road, sadly, with a lot of low points for them. But I think that’s also a reality for lots of people. The part, [especially], where they couldn’t have a kid biologically was very recognizable,” he said. While Bailey and Nolan have dangerous lives, it doesn’t apply to every first responder, something Hawley clarified, saying:

“I do think that, at the end of the day, just the sheer volume of near-death experiences that they both have on the daily… obviously, first responders can adopt, so we’re not saying that, but [it’s] the reality of their unique situation. But I think they’ve come through it and, for now at least, have made their peace with [the fact] that it’s just the two of them.”

Even with the storyline done, the show has a wealth of characters to explore and stories to tackle. In tonight’s April 22 episode, The Rookie does a documentary-themed episode. “Documentary filmmakers interview the LAPD on a complicated missing person’s case connected to John,” reads the official logline. In next week’s episodes, someone familiar but unpopular returns to Mid-Wilshire. “The team has mixed feelings when a familiar face returns hoping to prove himself. Meanwhile, an influencer gets his fans to come after Wesley (Shawn Ashmore), and Tim (Eric Winter) supports Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) as she prepares for the sergeant’s exam,” teases the logline for Episode 16, “The Return.” And in the following week, Skip Tracer Randy (Flula Borg) is back and there are some problems. “The team helps Skip Tracer Randy when his new love interest is kidnapped. Meanwhile, Angela (Alyssa Diaz) and Nyla (Mekia Cox) enlist their moms to help catch a con artist, and Wesley is threatened to drop a case,” reveals the official logline for Episode 17, “Mutiny and the Bounty.”

Tune in to ABC on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET to watch new episodes of The Rookie Season 7 and see how everything plays out.
