10 Actresses Who Are Perfect To Play Alex in ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Sequel

The post-credits scene of A Minecraft Movie featured the biggest Easter egg of the whole movie, introducing the character of Alex. However, only the back of her head was shown and no-one has been officially attached to the role. Instead, she was voiced by Kate McKinnon in an uncredited appearance and Alice May Connolly was credited as Alex’s double. This gives the filmmakers total freedom when it comes to casting the role in a sequel.
Alex as a character is essentially a blank slate, as in the game she is simply an alternative skin to Steve (Jack Black) and doesn’t have any discernible characteristics. In the game, both Steve and Alex are genderless, but the post-credits scene implies that Alex will be a female within the universe of A Minecraft Movie and act as a counterbalance to Jack Black. Even in her brief appearance, Alex comes across as a calmer and more mellow alternative to the high energy of Steve, which opens up the possibility of a number of actresses taking on the role. Each suggestion offers a different tone for the sequel, but as Alex is such an ambiguous character, it makes speculating who could play her a huge talking point for fans of the game.

Elizabeth Olsen
Most Recently Seen In: ‘The Assessment’
Although she is better known for more serious performances, Elizabeth Olsen’s work within the Marvel universe has proven her to be a good fit for Alex. If A Minecraft Movie builds on the conflict in the first movie and explores The End, Olsen’s portrayal as Wanda Maximoff has shown her electric action presence. However, it is her performance in WandaVision that aligns most with A Minecraft Movie’s tone. Jack Black’s performance leans heavily into satire; it is expressive, which lets the audience relax into the ridiculous.
Within Wandavision, Olsen showed her ability to code switch to different styles of TV with ease, highlighting her understanding of the nuances of different types of comedy. Therefore, she would easily be able to pull off the physical nature of A Minecraft Movie’s humor as well as an understanding that the laughs don’t come from the script itself but from the delivery.

Jessica Chastain
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Mothers’ Instinct’
It may be difficult to imagine an Oscar winner in A Minecraft Movie’s sequel, but Jessica Chastain has shown she is one of the best character actors currently working and has this innate ability to give these transformative performances. She was the beating heart of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, becoming unrecognizable and her performance in The Help showed her character depth, creating a melancholic yet still funny individual in Celia Foote.
However, what Chastain could bring to the Minecraft franchise is most obvious in her work outside of cinema. She is a feminist and her advocacy for women facing discrimination has evidenced her commitment to activism. A Minecraft Movie was criticized for the way it ignored its female characters, with them essentially leaving the movie for most of the important and interesting scenes. Having a perspective such as Chastain could bring balance to a sequel and allow Alex to serve as an important female role model for a new generation of cinema goers.

Madelaine Petsch
Most Recently Seen In: ‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’
Best known for her role as Cheryl Blossom in Riverdale, Madelaine Petsch should definitely be considered for Alex. As Cheryl, Petsch captured the essence of snarky humor, with her sharp delivery making the IT girl the best part of the show. Although she hasn’t done a huge number of straight comedies, and has recently transitioned into horror roles, her humility as an actress would offer much-needed contrast to Jack Black.
Petsch would fit the more mellow portrayal of Alex that the post-credits scene implied, as well as be able to match the commitment of Black. As Cheryl, she delivered ridiculous lines with a stoic, unshakable control that allows them to feel believable. Through this, Petsch has evidenced her ability to unwaveringly dedicate herself to a role and appreciate its tone, which is essential for A Minecraft Movie.
7
Amy Adams
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Nightbitch’
Naturally funny, Amy Adams’ energy would easily fit A Minecraft Movie. Her most recognizable comedic performance is as Giselle in Enchanted, where she plays a princess who finds herself stranded in New York City. Here, Adams showed the confusion and isolation of exploring a new world which could easily be replicated in the Minecraft universe, and she used exaggeration to make Giselle feel straight out of a fairytale.
Adams captured the caricatural nature of playing a princess, from her physical comedy to her expressiveness. This inflated style of humor is the crux of A Minecraft Movie. Additionally, her roles in The Muppets and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian highlight her prowess within the family genre and make her a perfect fit for Alex.
6
Rachel Sennott
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Saturday Night’
Rachel Sennott is bringing a new style of comedy to Hollywood that feels fresh and distinctive. As PJ in Bottoms and Alice in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, she showed her understanding of 21st century humor and what Gen-Z finds funny. These roles feel genuine as opposed to feeling like a misunderstanding of modern age comedy, which has allowed Sennott to be a hugely compelling actress for a new generation of movie-goers.
A Minecraft Movie has become a sensation because it captured memeability expertly. It understands that kids want short snapshots of recognizability and quotable lines. Sennott has the ability to deliver lines that fit this criteria, such as her cry of “he’s a Libra moon and that says a lot” in Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. She would definitely provide her own variant of the chicken jockey sensation from A Minecraft Movie as Alex.

Jayma Mays
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Disenchanted’
Although she hasn’t been seen on screen since Disenchanted back in 2022, Jayma Mays would make an extremely unique Alex. She has the infectious energy that makes her captivating to watch. Easily her most recognizable performance is as counseling Emma Pilsbury in Glee. Although the role is a little archaic in its portrayal of OCD, Mays brings a subtle modesty to the role, which contrasts the extreme performance of Jane Lynch as Sue Sylvester.
Mays doesn’t need loud acting to create humor. Instead, there was something about the way Mays intonated her lines in Glee that made her just as funny as the larger-than-life characters. In A Minecraft Movie, Mays could bring just as much humor as Black or Jason Momoa, without the movie becoming too crowded, and she would offer a more delicate style of humor.
4
Bryce Dallas Howard
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Argylle’
A hugely versatile actress, Bryce Dallas Howard would be an unorthodox pick for A Minecraft Movie in the best possible way. She is certainly expressive but more serious in tone compared to Momoa and Black. Howard would certainly fit the mold of being a calmer alternative to Steve and could act as a more maternal figure to Natalie and Henry.
As Lacie Pound in the Black Mirror episode “Nosedive”, Howard showed her evocative style of comedy, as she totally transformed as Lacie became more unstable throughout the runtime. There is something unapologetic about this performance that could definitely be transferred into the Minecraft universe.
3
Kate McKinnon
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Barbie’
The most obvious choice for Alex is Kate McKinnon, as the actress voiced the character in the post-credits scene. From her long run on Saturday Night Live to her scene-stealing performance as Weird Barbie in Barbie, she has a natural control over her characters and could match Black’s energy. McKinnon could make Alex as memorable as Steve but in a way that didn’t feel like a total copy.
McKinnon could mold Alex into whatever she needed to be, and having that blank slate would give her the freedom to be creative. The fact that Alex doesn’t have any characterization or backstory could present an obstacle for some actresses, yet McKinnon would be able to use her improvisation skills to her advantage.
2
Maya Hawke
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Inside Out 2’
If A Minecraft Movie wanted to create a younger version of Alex, Maya Hawke would be the ideal choice. Her off-kilter style of comedy can be seen in Asteroid City, Do Revenge, and most recently as Anxiety in Inside Out 2. Her casting would likely lead to a snarkier, more modern portrayal of Alex that would resonate with younger audiences and prevent the movie from feeling archaic for adolescents.
As Anxiety, Maya Hawke managed to deliver poignancy in a naturally charming way, something that could benefit A Minecraft Movie in future installments. Similarly, the huge recognizability of Stranger Things would just be another draw for fans, making the Minecraft franchise even more successful than it already is.
1
Zoey Deutch
Most Recently Seen In: ‘Juror #2’
Without a doubt, the only actress who could match Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie is Zoey Deutch. If the sequel wanted to retain the bizarre humor and lovable stupidity of the first movie, Deutch is the only person who could pull it off. Deutch manages to deliver lines with such bluntness that you cannot help but laugh with her. Anyone else would look as though they were working at a less intensive level compared to the commitment of Jack Black, but Deutch has shown she has got energy and is naturally funny.
From roles in Zombieland: Double Tap to Everybody Wants Some!!, Deutch has brought quirky charm to comedic roles. Additionally, her experience in rom-coms would allow A Minecraft Movie to explore any chemistry between Steve and Alex in a manner that doesn’t feel tacky, as both actors would be able to commit and not make the scenes overtly serious.
