Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Bosch: Legacy Season 3Bosch: Legacy has come to an end with the much-awaited Season 3 finale finally dropping. While this seemingly marks the end of the reign of Titus Welliver‘s Harry Bosch, the episode sets up the Maggie Q spin-off series Ballard. In “Dig Down,” Q’s Renée Ballard shows up at Bosch’s door, reopening the file of a cold case that Harry first investigated more than a decade ago. While an ongoing online petition may still bring Bosch back for another outing, Bosch: Legacy Season 3’s finale hands the detective one final cold case to solve before the curtain falls.

Bosch Fulfills an Old Promise in the Penultimate Episode of ‘Bosch: Legacy’

In Season 3, Episode 9 “Badlands,” Bosch contacts his ex-Afghanistan special forces partner, Ken Gerbizs (Gonzalo Menendez), to track down Finbar McShane (Michael Reilly Burke), who had murdered Siobhan Murphy’s (Orla Brady) family in cold blood. Bosch needs to fulfill the promise he made to Siobhan, and with Ken’s help, he works out that McShane is in Mexico. As soon as McShane’s location is revealed, Bosch does not waste any time before charting a plan to extract McShane from his hideout. Along with Gerbizs and Mo (Stephen A. Chang), Bosch reaches Mexico to bring McShane back to the United States and make him face justice. However, the plan goes awry when the federal police get involved, blocking the exit route for Bosch and Ken. Bosch remembers his promise to Maddie (Madison Lintz) about not killing McShane and bringing him back alive. However, a desperate measure is taken by Ken, who shoots McShane, punishing him for his crimes.

Another thread that the penultimate episode explores relates to the attempts by Honey Chandler (Mimi Rogers) and Bosch to trap the cartel gangster, Humberto Zorrillo (Manuel Uriza), for his hand in Detective Robertson’s (Paul Calderon) murder. To trap Humberto, Bosch gets his hands on Sheriff Garrity (Chris Bauer), who reveals information that is crucial in implicating Humberto. The threat from Humberto to Garrity makes it only easier for Bosch to turn Garrity into a witness. Eventually, using a tracker planted by Garrity, the DEA carries out the arrest before Humberto can make a big move. During all this, a tiff emerges between District Attorney Chandler and LAPD Police Chief Hughes (Sophina Brown) — a storyline that may continue in Ballard.

Bosch: Legacy‘s Season 3 finale, “Dig Down,” begins with the introduction of a character who will become the center of attention in the franchise’s next addition. After a dinner with Maddie, Bosch finds himself being tailed. After he confronts his follower, he finds out that the person is none other than Renée Ballard. Renée’s sudden interest in Bosch stems from her need to get her hands on copies of the files related to the Flower Girls case — a cold case related to the serial killings of young Filipino women. According to Renée, the original files have been stolen from the police station. Bosch quickly works out that a recent murder has occurred in the case, suggesting that the killer is on the hunt again. RHD Captain Rick Seals (James Read) orders Ballard to keep Bosch away from the case as he is not to be trusted, but Bosch joins forces with Ballard to stop the serial killer.

“Never Say Never”: Titus Welliver Won’t Rule Out a Future Return of ‘Bosch’

‘Bosch: Legacy’ officially ends today.

Being one of the oldest unsolved cases in Bosch’s career, the case attracts Bosch’s attention as he finds himself responsible for not stopping the killer. Thanks to Maddie, the suspect is soon identified when it’s revealed that a firefighter, Jeremy McKee (Owain Yeoman), was the one to pronounce dead both an earlier victim and the most recent victim in the case. After this, it doesn’t take Bosch and his team long to work out McKee’s history to confirm that he had left for Idaho after the first three killings — the reason why the list of victims didn’t grow until now. When Ballard informs Bosch of the DNA evidence found on the body of the most recent victim, Bosch enlists the help of Maddie and her partner, Reina Vasquez (Denise G. Sanchez). While Maddie and Vasquez succeed in pulling up McKee’s car and getting his DNA sample, DA Chandler insists that just DNA is not enough to build a case, prompting Bosch and Ballard to take extreme measures.

The Season 3 Finale of ‘Bosch: Legacy’ Leaves Some Questions Unanswered

Knowing that McKee will soon come for his next victim, Bosch and Ballard decide to tail him after planting a tracker on his car. Although the tracker’s signal is soon lost due to the battery running out, Mo helps Bosch and Ballard find McKee’s location by hacking into his computer. Thankfully, due to the promptness shown by the two, McKee is stopped just in time before he can kill his next victim. The final moments of Bosch: Legacy Season 3 see Bosch and Ballard explaining the details of their findings to Chandler, who will go for the death sentence for McKee.

In the final moments of Bosch: Legacy Season 3 and what turns out to be a fitting passing on of the baton, Harry Bosch and Renée Ballard bid farewell to each other, in the hopes that they may team up once again in the future (hopefully). The last season of Bosch: Legacy, while setting up some important storylines for the spin-off series, leaves a few questions unanswered. For instance, the storyline about Councilman Patrick Currey (Jeremy Glazer) is left unresolved. Also, Vasquez struggles to reconcile with her sister after her role in Albert’s (Tommy Martinez) arrest. While it remains to be seen how much of Bosch: Legacy‘s story makes it to Ballard, fans can rejoice in the fact that there’s still more to come from the constantly rewarding world of Bosch.

All seasons of Bosch: Legacy are available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S.
