Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is out today, and after reading Nic Reuben’s RockPaperShotgun review, my finger hit buy faster than you can believe. For those on PC and looking to save some coin, Fanatical already has it at 20 percent off on launch day.

That’s £33.59/$39.99 for the standard edition, or £39.99/$47.99 for the deluxe. You get a Steam key, ready to install immediately with no faff, just instant access to this beautifully grim, fantasy RPG.

In his review, Nic called Clair Obscur an “operatic, haunting, and slightly unhinged RPG”, so naturally, I’m in. It’s rare to read a review where someone sounds that sincerely bowled over by a game. Not surprised, exactly. Just very, very impressed. And mildly concerned that a debut studio pulled this off without any apparent stumbling around in the dark.

You play as part of Expedition 33, the unlucky souls sent to stop the Paintress, a mythical figure who wakes up once a year, paints a number on her monolith, and erases everyone of that age. This year, she’s chosen 33. It’s a death ritual disguised as ceremony, and you’re off to break it, despite every sign pointing to failure.

If you’ve been looking for an new RPG to crack open, that 20 percent off at Fanatical just makes it easier to say yes. Or, just for our friends in the UK, Amazon currently has 20% off Xbox Series X and PS5 as well for those on console, or if you’re looking to gift to a friend who’s not made the jump to PC, yet.
