3 Body Problem

gets a new filming update for seasons 2 and 3, revealing a major location change. Created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, the sci-fi series serves as an adaptation of The Three Body Problem novel by Liu Cixin. The show premiered in 2024, following a group of scientists as they work to prevent the eradication of the human race by an incoming alien race. The show was enough of a hit for Netflix to greenlight 3 Body Problem season 2 and a season 3, which will serve as the series’ conclusion.

Now, Screen Daily shares updated production information for 3 Body Problem season 2 and 3, revealing that the show is set to film the two seasons back-to-back in Hungary. This marks a shift from season 1, which was filmed mostly in the U.K., including at Shepperton Studios. Season 1 also filmed in Spain and Panama, in addition to places around the U.S., like New York, Massachusetts, and Florida. It’s not yet clear what additional international locations will be added for seasons 2 and 3.

Screen Daily notes that filings on the Hungarian National Film Office website reveal that production on the remaining 3 Body Problem seasons will get underway on July 8, 2025, with a wrap expected on August 2, 2027. With filming moving to Hungary, the production can take advantage of the country’s competitive filming incentives, which includes a 30% rate on eligible production spend, with 25% of that permitted to be non-Hungarian. Finally, the report reveals that the budgets for seasons 2 and 3 is a massive $267 million, $80 million of which comes from indirect subsidy.

What This Means For 3 Body Problem Seasons 2 & 3

When Season 2 Could Arrive

3 Body Problem reviews were generally positive from critics and audiences alike, but it has been theorized that the show didn’t perform as well as Netflix may have been hoping. Benioff and Weiss are, of course, known for creating HBO’s Game of Thrones, and the Netflix sci-fi was the duo’s next big project after wrapping that story up. Boasting a massive reported budget of $160 million for 3 Body Problem season 1, Netflix’s vague greenlight of two final seasons with no mention of episode count was not a decision that screamed confidence in the project.

Netflix’s sci-fi thriller series 3 Body Problem ends with a cliffhanger, paving the way for a second season.

The latest update challenges this idea. $267 million is clearly a massive sum and the two-year production is a monumental undertaking. The move to Hungary could certainly help this money go even further, as season 1 qualified for a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% in the U.K. The filming update also provides some idea of when the show could release. Assuming the seasons will indeed be filmed back-to-back and not concurrently, 3 Body Problem season 2 could potentially release in late 2026.

On Rotten Tomatoes, 3 Body Problem has a critics’ score of 79% and an audience score of 77%.

Can The Show Avoid A Game Of Thrones Problem?

After a year of radio silence, the latest update on 3 Body Problem is a promising one. The move to Hungary doesn’t necessarily mean that what ends up on screen will look any different, but the report is a sign that things are finally gearing up. It’s possible that the 3 Body Problem cast will be sharing behind-the-scenes looks at filming, which could be exciting.

It seems very likely that seasons 2 and 3 will not both consist of eight episodes like season 1. What remains unknown, then, is whether a reduced episode count can do justice to the remaining story in the books. After Game of Thrones‘ condensed final two seasons, this remains a legitimate concern. In any case, more news on 3 Body Problem may now not be too far off.
