How Kate Lockwood Survives THAT In You Season 5

Warning! Spoilers for You season 5 ahead!
Things looked pretty rough for Kate Lockwood in You season 5, but somehow, she walked away alive in the end. Kate became Joe Goldberg’s obsession back in You season 4, and the Netflix series’ final season picked up with the reveal that they had managed to remain happily married for three years. Their pact to bring out the best in one another seemed to have held up, but that all quickly fell apart when the snakes within Kate’s company began to come for her. Determined to protect the woman he loved, Joe’s darkest impulses slipped back up to the surface, and Kate didn’t much like what she saw.
Like most of Joe’s love interests in You, Kate had been blinded by Joe’s charm. However, the time eventually came when she could no longer pretend her husband wasn’t a monster. This is always when Joe turns on his lovers. Guinevere Beck and Love Quinn both died when Joe lost interest in them, and Marienne Bellamy very nearly met the same fate. Kate was determined to take Joe down first, however. She teamed up with Nadia and Marienne in You season 5 to finally bring Joe to justice. However, a fiery showdown at Mooney’s Bookstore appeared to put an end to Kate’s mission.
How Kate Lockwood Survives The Fire At Mooney’s Bookstore
Bronte Thought Kate Was Dead When She Found Her In The Basement
In You season 5, episode 9, “Trial of the Furies,” Joe and Kate seemed to have gotten the better of one another. They both lay wounded in the basement of Mooney’s Bookstore, waiting for the flames to overtake them. Kate also suffered a gunshot wound, and it appeared to audiences that she died before the worst of the fire and smoke made it to this underground floor. Bronte showed up and pulled Joe from the building, but Kate’s body was left behind. We all assumed that Kate was gone for good, but she appeared alive and well at the end of You‘s final episode.
We don’t see precisely how Kate survived the fire or her gunshot wound. She is shown to have rather severe burn scars on her arm, so it can be assumed that she remained in the basement until at least the flames had made their way to her. However, at some point after Bronte left with Joe, help must have arrived at Mooney’s. If Kate’s heart had stopped when Bronte checked if she was alive, it was resuscitated by paramedics, and she was stabilized at a hospital while her husband made his escape. We will never know for certain, but the important part is that Joe’s second wife in You survived.
Kate’s Survival Is Part Of A Positive Trend For You Season 5
You Season 5 Flipped The Script
Before losing consciousness in Mooney’s basement, Kate acknowledged the irony of her impending death. She noted that both of Joe’s wives would be burned in fires. Of course, the tragedy of his lovers goes far beyond this. For so long, everyone with whom Joe became obsessed would inevitably become his victim. However, Kate’s survival at the end of You marked a far more positive trend. Joe’s second wife lived on to care for and love his son, ensuring that little Henry wouldn’t grow up to become a monster like his father. Kate broke Joe’s cruel pattern in You in more ways than one.

You season 5 marked the end of Joe Goldberg’s story, but he had plenty of time to add a handful of new names to his long list of tragic victims.
Not only are their survivals evidence of a more positive trend for the show’s final season, but it’s a powerful message about the strength and unity of women against misogyny.
Ultimately, Kate, Marienne, and Bronte all lived in You. What’s more, each played a part in Joe facing justice. Not only are their survivals evidence of a more positive trend for the show’s final season, but it’s a powerful message about the strength and unity of women against misogyny. Kate may have walked away with some scars in You, but the point is that she managed to walk away at all.
