Now in its third week of release, Angel Studios’ animated offering The King of Kings appears to be slowing down. The movie’s release was timed to capitalize on the Easter weekend, which it did. But it has now started losing theaters to newer movies, especially at the domestic box office. The King of Kings recently passed what will likely be its final milestone, as it attempts to generate whatever little extra revenue that it can from overseas markets. The movie opened in the wake of The Chosen: Last Supper series, and ended up comfortably out-grossing it.

It has now made nearly $55 million domestically, and another $4 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of almost $60 million. Produced on a reported budget of $15 million, The King of Kings is the second-biggest hit in Angel Studios’ history. The outfit specializes in content aimed at religious audiences, barring the occasional misinformation-spreader aimed at the Q-Anon crowd. The King of Kings is a relatively above-the-board movie; it’s inspired by a book written by Charles Dickens, who also appears as a main character along with his young son.

Together, they’re transported to the times of Jesus Christ, who’s voiced in the film by Oscar Isaac. Like most faith-based movies, The King of Kings was embraced by its target audience. It holds an incredible 97% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, earning a “verified hot” badge of approval. The film’s official critics’ score sits at a less-glossy 65%. The Chosen: Last Supper series was also acclaimed by its target audience; while the first two installments earned 99% audience scores on RT, the third received a 98% rating. On the polling platform CinemaScore, The King of Kings earned a rare perfect A+, becoming one of only 128 movies in history to do so.

‘The King of Kings’ Features a Star-Studded Voice Cast

Like its fellow animated biblical film The Prince of Egypt, which featured the late Val Kilmer as the voice of Moses, The King of Kings also boasts an all-star voice cast. Joining Isaac in the ensemble are Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Ben Kingsley, and Forest Whitaker. You can watch the movie in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
