Over the last 70 years, we’ve seen many versions of Lewis Carroll‘s Alice In Wonderland on our screens. There are always new ways to experience a timeless classic, and Japan is bringing a different take on the story in anime form. Titled Dive in Wonderland, the new movie is set to debut this summer and, in order to tease it, P.A. Works decided to reveal a slate of character looks along with a promotional video. The anime movie is yet to get a release date on this side of the world.
The images reveal the character designs of Dive in Wonderland by artists Kosuke Kawazura and Mio Fujishina. In then, we can see some pretty iconic characters like the White Rabbit — albeit a lot more technological with a smartphone in hand, tablet and smartwatch — the purple (but not striped) Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, The Queen of Hearts and many others. The visuals make it clear that Dive in Wonderland will very much take place in the modern world, so it will be interesting to see how the movie mixes those elements into the story.
Dive in Wonderland is directed by Toshiya Shinohara, who helmed several InuYasha movies and Lupin IIII: Crisis in Tokyo. The screenplay is by Yuko Kakihara, who has recently penned episodes of hugely popular anime series like Dragon Ball DAIMA and The Apothecary Diaries. Although this is the first time that the Lewis Carroll creation is shaped into an anime movie, Japan previously adapted it into a 52-episode anime titled Fushigi no Kuni no Alice that debuted in 1983. It adapted both the original story and the sequel Through The Looking Glass.
‘Alice In Wonderland’ Is A Timeless Classic
Despite the many adaptations, 1951’s Alice in Wonderland is still widely regarded as the definitive adaptation of the story. The 2D animated movie by Disney popularized the story an its characters, and it was also the title that made the Mickey Mouse studio kick off its never-ending slate of live-action adaptations of its classics. Back in 2010, the Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland made over a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, proving once and for all that the story remains as timeless as ever.
