Doctor Who

season 15, episode 3, “The Well” saw the Doctor face a great threat who knew his real name, but that’s no surprise considering their history. As the Doctor digs deeper into the mystery of Belinda, and tries to find a way to return to Earth in 2025, he has been forced to take the long way around, running into danger along the way. However, his recent encounter in a deep dark cave presented an unexpected run-in with an old familiar rival.

The Doctor is always drawn to mystery, danger, and exploration, which makes his arrival on an old abandoned mining planet seem like a run-of-the-mill pit stop. However, when the Doctor and Belinda are trapped on the planet, and they begin to see clues about a deadly massacre that occurred among the crew, the Doctor is determined to get to the bottom of what happened. With one sole survivor, the Doctor finds the means to get answers, but what he finds proves to be infinitely more disturbing and haunting than anything he could have previously imagined.

The Monster Inhabited The Doctor’s Mind During “Midnight”

The Doctor Has Had An Encounter With The Midnight Monster Before

Very seldom is anything random when it comes to where the TARDIS lands. As seen in previous episodes, the TARDIS is a living thing that often brings the Doctor to the places where he can do the most good, help others, and save the day. And in “The Well,” it appears as though the TARDIS has taken the Doctor once again to a place where he is needed. While he is generally an expert on many things across all time and space, he has had first-hand experience on the planet where they stop, though he doesn’t immediately recognize it after thousands of years have passed.

Why Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Says “Midnight” Was The Most Scared He’s Ever Been

In Doctor Who season 15, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor claims “Midnight” was the most scared he’s ever been, and there’s a good reason why.

As it turns out, this planet is one that the Tenth Doctor, along with his companion Donna Noble, visited back in season 4 of the show in 2008. At that time, it was a pleasure and resort planet, which operated a tourist hot spot and some tours to the surface of the planet, which was covered in diamonds. However, when the Doctor joined a tour bus with several other holidaymakers, he found himself the target of a terrifying unseen monster. The Doctor lost control of his body, and was possessed by a terrifying creature.

Will We Ever Learn The Doctor’s Real Name In Doctor Who?

The Doctor’s Name Is More Than A Secret

While the creature’s invasion of the mind and body of the Doctor allowed it to gain access to the Doctor’s deepest, darkest secrets, the audience was only able to see the pain, fear, and suffering from the Doctor on his face. However, the Doctor managed to escape being killed by the creature, and left Midnight for good, until his return with Belinda. Since then and long before, there have been many allusions to the Doctor having a name that has been kept a secret throughout the show’s run.

This secret has occasionally been hinted at, and in a magazine, it was technically spelled out for readers, but the truth of the matter is that the Doctor’s name remains a mystery to everyone, including his nearest and dearest friends. River Song was made aware of the Doctor’s name, but even then, the show was careful to avoid ever making up a definitive name. By this point in its lengthy run, revealing the name would be more of a disappointment than anything, which is why Doctor Who should avoid revealing the Doctor’s name.
