Brokeback Mountain Theatrical Rerelease Set for Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal Movie

Ang Lee’s 2005 award-winning Brokeback Mountain is headed back to theaters, with Focus Features confirming the film will return to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
When is the Brokeback Mountain theaterical rerelease?
The Brokeback Mountain theatrical rerelease has been set, with screenings on June 22 and June 25, 2025. Focus Features also announced that the rerelease will be accompanied by a new poster, new merchandise, and other promotional celebrations, none of which have been announced.
Originally released in 2005, Brokeback Mountain starred Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, respectively. The film follows the pair of cowboys as they develop a complex romantic relationship in the 1960s and come to grips with their true selves. Alongside Ledger and Gyllenhaal, the movie also starred Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, and Randy Quaid.
The film was a smash hit for Focus Features and led to critical and commercial praise. The movie was nominated for eight total Academy Awards, winning Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Despite the film’s massive success, the movie still faced backlash and criticism from groups against the homosexuality depicted in the movie.
After losing Best Picture to Crash, critics also accused the Academy of homophobia and discrimination and purposely not awarding the movie with the Oscar due to its subject matter. Ang Lee would back those beliefs up last year, when he said he believes that, at the time, there was a “ceiling” for how many awards a film like Brokeback could be given.
Despite the controversy, Brokeback Mountain remains one of the most influential films of this generation and is often seen as a big reason for the advancement of queer cinema into the mainstream. In 2018, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.
