Franchise vet David Arquette has finally broke his silence about his upcoming Scream 7 return after three years since his character’s death in 2022’s Scream. Arquette will be reprising his iconic role as Dewey Riley, who was one of the original survivors of the Woodsboro murders. In his fifth appearance, Dewey wasn’t able to escape the attack of Mikey Madison’s Amber/Ghostface after saving Jack Quaid and Jenna Ortega’s characters.

Scream 7 will be led by franchise vets Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as they reprise their respective fan-favorite roles as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers. Just like Arquette, Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley are also returning as Stu Macher and Roman Bridger despite their characters’ respective deaths in 2022’s Scream and 2000’s Scream 3. In addition, it has also been confirmed that Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin and Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin are also appearing in the next sequel.

David Arquette on Dewey’s surprise Scream 7 return

When asked about his initial reaction to his Scream 7 casting during a recent interview with ComingSoon, Arquette revealed that his return was actually supposed to be a surprise for fans when the movie comes out. He also expressed his excitement on working with the original cast members again.

“I mean, it was a spoiler. It wasn’t supposed to be released. It was supposed to be a surprise. I’m not really supposed to talk about it too much, but Kevin Williamson was directing and that was a real thrill,” Arquette said. “And it’s amazing to see him be able to have that opportunity and to get Neve back in this one. And Matthew, I mean . . . It’s exciting. I love playing the role of Dewey and will always love playing the role of Dewey.”

The seventh installment is being directed by franchise creator Kevin Williamson from a screenplay written by Guy Busick. It is produced by Paul Neinstein, William Sherak, and James Vanderbilt. Joining the returning cast members are franchise newcomers Isabel May (1883), Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web), Asa Germann (The Boys: Gen V), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Joel McHale (Community), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Mark Consuelos (Riverdale), Ethan Embry (Grace & Frankie), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Michelle Randolph (Landman), and Jimmy Tatro (Theater Camp).

The movie is currently slated to arrive in theaters on February 27, 2026.
