I completely forgot that this Severance actor was once a regular in Netflix’s You until his cameo appearance in season 5. Joe Goldberg’s story came to a close with this final installment of You, which made these episodes the perfect opportunity for previous cast members to return. Most of these were minor characters from Joe’s past, but this didn’t make them any less of a delight to see on screen. This was especially true for one character from You season 1, whose actor has since become far more famous as a member of Severance‘s primary cast.

In You season 5, Joe Goldberg was caught on a TikTok live murdering Bronte’s friend Clayton. This resulted in a variety of characters coming out of the woodwork and posting their own experiences with the violent killer in episode 7, “#JoeGoldberg.” We saw cameos from many of You‘s four previous seasons, including Paco from season 1, Sherry and Cary Conrad from season 2, and more. As I watched these characters call Joe out one at a time in this You episode, I was shocked to see a face I had completely forgotten had ever been a part of the series.

Ethan Is A Blast From The Past

One of the characters who posted a TikTok about Joe in You season 5 was Ethan Russell, an old employee at Mooney’s Bookstore from season 1. Although Ethan was a minor character overall, he appeared in each of the 10 episodes from You‘s debut installment. I vaguely remembered the character when he appeared in season 5, but I was shocked to see that he was played by Severance‘s Zach Cherry.

It’s a surprising reminder of where Cherry started and how far he has come.

Cherry plays Dylan in Severance, a role that significantly accelerated his career when the first season premiered in 2022. You season 1 was released on Netflix in 2018, and while Cherry wasn’t new to his acting career, he had, for the most part, been limited to similarly minor roles. Now, seven years later, Severance is among the biggest hit TV shows of the 2020s, and Cherry is a primary cast member. It’s a bit funny that, after all this time, this actor has returned to his smaller You role. It’s a surprising reminder of where Cherry started and how far he has come.

Ethan Returned To Speak Out About Joe

Cherry was a relatively unknown name back when he played Ethan in You season 1, and the character himself never got any significant follow-up after that first installment. We never found out what happened to Ethan after Joe left New York at the start of You season 2, and it wasn’t particularly important. However, now that Cherry is significantly more famous, You season 5 returning to his season 1 character is a significant treat.

Cherry’s Ethan didn’t directly speak out against Joe like many of the other returning characters in You season 5 did. He is a rather sweet and gentle character, which means Joe never felt threatened enough by Ethan to lock him in his cage. Cherry’s character stated that he had never had a problem with Joe, but conceded that he prefers to listen to and believe victims. It wasn’t entirely incriminating, but it made Joe angry nonetheless. Ultimately, the moment served as a fun callback to You‘s earlier years, as well as a reminder of how far Severance‘s Zach Cherry’s career has come.
