Today’s Connections Hints & Answers For April 30, 2025 (Puzzle #689)

The categories for today’s Connections puzzle are somewhat obscure, referring to both physical objects and more abstract concepts that may be challenging to piece together. I struggled with today’s puzzle due to the presence of many ideas that have seemingly no similarities. However, with the right clues, you can find the right fragments you need to reach important answers.
Many of the words in today’s puzzle have multiple definitions, so don’t be afraid to look up phrases, even if you think you know their meanings. You only have four chances to make a mistake before losing the puzzle and being told the right answers. Since you have fewer chances than the daily Wordle puzzle, you should take your time to piece together solutions for today’s Connections.
Today’s Connections Category Hints
April 30 #689
Be careful not to go to your first instinct with a word’s definition in today’s puzzle, as they are very easy to misinterpret. The challenge I had when solving today’s puzzle was finding a good starting point with the themes behind today’s four categories. After some trial and error, I realized that the themes for today were action and standing, with the second part referring more to someone’s reputation.
To help you start figuring out what each category in today’s puzzle is about, follow some of these clues:
- One category is about things related to parts of something you walk around on.
- One category is about things related to items or space used to host a large group of people.
- One category is about things related to your standing with others.
- One category is about things related to words that end in phrases used to talk about something disgusting.

PARTS OF A SHOE |

---|---|---|---|
HEEL |
SOLE |
TONGUE |
UPPER |
At first, this section of the puzzle was tricky for me to solve, as I imagined that FACE went with TONGUE for a different concept. Upon some reflection though, I realized that HEEL refers to the back part of a shoe, with a TONGUE being integral to the interior of the same piece of clothing. When I thought about the SOLE and UPPER parts of a shoe, the rest of this category came together naturally.

ACCOMMODATION |

CAPACITY |
CHAIRS |
ROOM |
SEATING |
ROOM is a word with narrow definitions, either as a physical space or referring to having enough room to fit people in a space. This led me to pick CHAIRS and SEATING as the next words in this category, as I imagined people were making ROOM for some larger event. To help finalize this part of the puzzle, I realized that you have to have enough CAPACITY to fit everyone in a ROOM for whatever event you might put together.

REPUTATION |

FACE |
IMAGE |
REGARD |
STANDING |
This part of the puzzle was the easiest for me to solve, mostly because I thought of FACE as “saving face.” This idea about reputation was already in my mind, as someone would want to protect their IMAGE or STANDING in the world. To get the final word, I thought about how people often hold others in high or low REGARD, which also relates to this category’s theme.

ENDING WITH SYNONYMS FOR “YUCK” |

---|---|---|---|
DYNASTY |
ENGROSS |
GIMMICK |
MILDEW |
This is likely the trickiest part of the puzzle, as words like GIMMICK and DYNASTY have very strict definitions. One common pattern I noticed between these words, though, is how they ended. DYNASTY ends in “nasty,” while GIMMICK has “ick” at the end of it. Similarly, ENGROSS has “gross” and MILDEW has “ew,” forming the only connective tissue between each concept to finish off the puzzle.
