Invincible Season 3’s The Immortal Arc & Tragic Kate Twist Explained By Actor

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Invincible season 3.
Actor Ross Marquand provides more insight into the future version of his character, the Immortal, in Invincible season 3. Mark Grayson/Invincible (Steven Yeun) is taken to a future timeline in season 3, episode 4, “You Were My Hero,” where the Immortal has become a tormented and murderous tyrant after he was left in charge of Earth for centuries. Mark ultimately kills the Immortal, but only after the former Guardian of the Globe begs to be put out of his misery, brutally fights Mark, and leaves him with no other choice.
During a panel at AwesomeCon moderated by ScreenRant‘s Joe Deckelmeier, a fan asked Marquand what went into creating this version of the Immortal, who had seemingly forgotten the love of his life, Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow). Marquand not only agrees that Kate had been forgotten, but shares his belief that having to live indefinitely without Kate is what broke the Immortal. He also suggested that the Immortal may have had dementia after living for thousands of years. Check out Marquand’s comments below:
I think he did forget Kate, unfortunately. If you’ve been around for 10,000 years… You and I may think, “The loves of our lives, whether it’s 2 or 3 years or 50 years, how could you ever forget that?” Especially when he’s had children with her, and certainly he has their promise.
But I think when you zoom out enough and look at a lifetime that’s lasted for 10,000 years, it’s hard. Especially because he might be a little senile. He might have a little bit of dementia. It might have taken him several thousand years to get dementia, but I think that’s what happened.
I think he’s just such a broken man, and he literally tells Mark in this episode, “I begged you not to put me in charge.” All he wanted to do was be a father and live out his years with Kate for as long as she was able to. Obviously, she’s not immortal like him. And I think it broke him. I think he’s really broken after being in charge of the planet for that long, and that’s why he became a psycho killer.
That’s what I think – I don’t know if that’s true, you’d have to ask Robert [Kirkman] about that.
What This Means For Invincible
Ross Marquand’s Comments Make Future Immortal’s Story Even More Tragic
The Immortal’s story in Invincible season 3, episode 4 was already tragic, with the once honorable hero turning into a despot who forces Mark to kill him. In the episode, the tragic emphasis is mostly on how far the Immortal has fallen, the unique loneliness of living forever while everyone he cares about dies, and Mark once again having to kill against his will. Marquand’s comments add a deeper layer of tragedy to the episode given his comments about how losing Kate impacted the Immortal.

The Immortal is one of the most important members of the Guardians of the Globe, and here is everything that Invincible has revealed about him.
This adds new context to the episode and gives Kate a significant presence even though she does not appear in this future timeline. It is one thing to lose friends and colleagues, but another to lose the woman he loves, all while knowing he will have to live for centuries without her. Marquand’s remarks make the future Immortal’s story devastating, but at the same time, it adds more weight to the Immortal and Kate walking away from the Guardians of the Globe in the present.
