Confirmation, Cast & Everything We Know

Apple TV+’s neo-noir crime drama Sugar was a critical darling during its first season in 2024, and now the private detective series is returning for season 2 soon. Created for the small screen by Mark Protosevich, the show follows a private investigator named John Sugar (Colin Farrell) who cracks cases for various clients in modern-day Los Angeles. Season 1 saw Sugar on the hunt for the missing granddaughter of a famous film producer, but the real interesting twist was that the titular character is actually an alien sent to Earth to observe humans.
Sugar delivers many of the same thematic elements as classic noir movies from the ’40s and ’50s, while also adding in a shocking science fiction twist that completely recontextualizes the series. Though the case-per-season format has worked well for modern mystery series, Sugar stands apart from its contemporaries by interweaving political intrigue with a sci-fi slant. By subverting expectations, the series not only made itself appointment viewing, but has paved the way for an ongoing future. This made season 2 an absolute necessity, and Apple TV+ eventually renewed the series for a sophomore season in late 2024.

Season 2 Adds Even More New Actors
Not long after the sophomore season added its first new ensemble members, the latest news confirms that three more stars have joined Sugar season 2. Continuing to flesh out an already impressive roster, Shea Whigham (Fargo), Sasha Calle (The Flash), and Raymond Lee (the Quantum Leap reboot) have all been cast (via Deadline). Though details are still cloudy concerning their characters, Whigham is rumored to be playing a government employee who assists Sugar, while Calle could be playing a hustler who also assists the alien detective. Nothing is known about Lee’s character for now.
Sugar Season 2 Is Confirmed
Apple TV+ Renewed The Series In October 2024
With nearly a year passing since the season 1 debut, it will likely be another year before the science fiction neo-noir will be available to stream.
Though it took the better part of six months for Apple TV+ to make their decision, Sugar was renewed for a second season in October 2024. At the time, no production details were revealed, though it was confirmed that Colin Farrell would be back on hand to play the titular alien private investigator. Breaking Bad and Preacher writer Sam Catlin has been tapped to serve as showrunner for the sophomore season, replacing series creator Mark Protosevich.
Executive producers Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon released this glowing statement regarding the show’s renewal:
“It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season. We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.”
Casting for season 2 started in March 2025, but it still isn’t clear exactly when filming is expected to begin. Like most major streaming releases, it seems as if time isn’t of the essence when it comes to bringing Sugar back to the small screen. With nearly a year passing since the season 1 debut, it will likely be another year before the science fiction neo-noir will be available to stream.
Sugar season 1 debuted on April 5, 2025.

Sugar Season 2 Story Details
John Stays On Earth For Another Case
The final few episodes of Sugar season 1 not only offered a truly shocking sci-fi twist, but also paved the way for the series to carry on into season 2. With the case from season 1 effectively (if not satisfactorily) wrapped, the finale gave John Sugar a shock by revealing that his long-lost sister might still be alive after all. On top of that, the aliens’ allies on Earth have flipped on them, meaning there will be plenty of hostile humans out to kill Sugar as he uncovers their twisted secrets.
