Mayfair Witches has ensorceled enough viewers to secure a third season. AMC announced today that the supernatural drama will return next year. The series, part of AMC’s Immortal Universe of series inspired by the works of Anne Rice, is also gaining a new co-showrunner, in the form of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul veteran Thomas Schnauz. He’ll join Esta Spaulding, who shepherded the series through its first two seasons.

AMC promises that season three will introduce new magical families and will delve deeper into the history of witchcraft, including the infamous 17th century Salem Witch Trials: Spaulding promises the new season will be “…a contemporary twist on the Salem story, it promises to be our most delicious yet.” The series is an adaptation of the Lives of the Mayfair Witches series of novels: the first two seasons loosely adapted the first two books of the series, The Witching Hour and Lasher, and thus season three will likely draw inspiration from the third and final book in the trilogy, Taltos. The characters from the series later collided with Rice’s most famous creation, the vampire Lestat, in another series of books.

What Happened in Season 2 of ‘Mayfair Witches’?

In the wake of the first-season finale, Rowan Fielding (Alexandra Daddario) found herself raising her newborn son, a reincarnation of his father, the demonic entity Lasher (Jack Huston). Lasher quickly grew to maturity in a span of days, then began preying upon the other members of the magical Mayfair family. Rowan was forced to seek the aid of malevolent Mayfair patriarch Cortland (Harry Hamlin), who she’d turned to stone after discovering he’d killed her mother. Together with Rowan’s ex, scientist Sam Larkin (Ben Feldman), they eventually pursued him to the ancestral home of the Mayfairs in Scotland; there, Cortland fell prey to a scheme by his brother, Ian (Ian Pirie) to have his body taken over by their long-dead father, Julien (Ted Levine). Ian’s cult killed Lasher to steal his power, but not before he fathered a new demonic offspring; however, Julien betrayed the cult and took all of Lasher’s power before escaping. Rowan is left to rebuild the Mayfair legacy, and erases Larkin’s memories of her to cut all ties with her old life.

Mayfair Witches is the second series in the Immortal Universe: it was preceded by Interview With the Vampire, which has itself been renewed for a third season. They will soon be joined by a third series, The Talamasca, which will center around the ancient order dedicated to monitoring supernatural beings: agents of the Talamasca have already appeared in both Interview with the Vampire and Mayfair Witches.

Mayfair Witches has been renewed for a third season on AMC; no premiere date has yet been announced. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
