Born Again’ Directors Explain the Blue Light for Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye

Daredevil: Born Again directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have pulled back the curtain on one of the more compelling aspects of the penultimate episode. After being absent from the series since Episode 1, Daredevil: Born Again Episode 8 features the return of Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin Poindexter, aka Bullseye. Matt (Charlie Cox) nearly kills Bullseye in the premiere after he murders of Foggy (Elden Henson), and now seven episodes later, it’s time for a check-in. Juxtapose to Daredevil’s red, Bethel’s scenes as Bullseye both in the prison and at the black and white ball in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 8 are shaded with tints of blue. During a recent interview with Brandon Davis of Phase Hero, Daredevil: Born Again directors Benson and Morehead explained this choice:

Benson: “The whole thing with the blue lighting and the blue flowers and all of that was something we were laser-focused on because of our weird love for Bullseye.”

Moorhead: “There was something about that season 3 plot where he becomes the job of the show, like, horrible thing after horrible thing happens to him that turns him into this monster. And for us, there was something about making sure that we honor that transformation and that you can still see the reasons why you should empathize with him and why he’s tragic. That was something we’re really protective over while also allowing him to change and allowing the character to let his monster out a little more.”

Bullseye is transferred to Gen Pop in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 8, which is essentially a death sentence for someone with as many enemies as him. Matt is still far from ready to sit down for a chat with Poindexter, even going as far as to slam his head on the table before walking out and delivering another F-bomb to add to the MCU’s collection. Bethel ultimately uses his resourcefulness to escape from prison after breaking free of his restraints and murdering a guard and a doctor, and he sets his sights on the black and white ball with the hopes of assassinating Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Fortunately for Kingpin, Matt can sense Bullseye’s presence, and he steps in front of the bullet at the last moment, risking his life for the legendary villain he once brought down.

How Will the Last Episode of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Play Out?

No plot details about the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale have been revealed, but Matt being shot is nothing more than a fake-out death, as the show has already been renewed for Season 2. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher has also been absent from Daredevil: Born Again since making his MCU debut earlier in the season, and if there’s anyone Matt can rely on to help take down corrupt cops and government officials, it’s him. Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) has been out of the picture since the finale, with Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) being Matt’s new love interest, but only time will tell if the two will still be together by the end of the season.

The first eight episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are now streaming. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the series, and watch Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
