Thunderbolts* Early Opening Weekend Box Office Projections Revealed for MCU Movie

The opening weekend box office projections for Thunderbolts* have been revealed.
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* will hit United States theaters this coming May. Directed by Jake Schreier, the MCU movie stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, and more.
What are the opening weekend box office projections for Thunderbolts*?
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Thunderbolts* is currently eyeing an opening weekend in “the $63 million to $77 million range, with a target number of $70 million” at the domestic box office.
“Disney insiders say there’s plenty of room for growth, noting that the film’s rag-tag team of antiheroes and villains are making their appearance on the big screen for the first time, so aren’t a known property (advance ticket sales, which commenced earlier this week, are on the slower side so far),” The Hollywood Reporter articles notes. “The studio says the response to the film has been strong among those treated to early screenings, as well as among theater owners, who saw footage of Thunderbolts* at CinemaCon last week.”
While $70 million is far from a terrible opening, it’s on the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to Marvel movies. Captain America: Brave New World, in comparison, opened to $88.5 million, though it came out during President’s Day weekend and made approximately $100 million over the four full days.
The cast of Thunderbolts* further includes Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Lewis Pullman as Bob/Sentry, Geraldine Viswanathan as Mel, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
“Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes—Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts. Will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite as something much more before it’s too late?”
Thunderbolts* will be released in United States theaters on May 2, 2025.
