If part of Rutledge’s reasons were evident, as he wanted to get rich at everyone else’s expense, his fixation with US President Danielle Sutton was personal, thus less immediate to grasp, becoming clear only in G20’s ending. This put the President’s family in grave danger, and Demetrius, Serena and Derek’s well-being quickly became Danielle Sutton’s main focus after trying to escape the hotel for so long. With Rutledge’s nefarious plan having separate objectives, G20 included plenty of tortuous twists, making its ending more satisfying because of the multiple action sequences seeing President Sutton directly involved in fighting off her enemies.

How President Danielle Sutton Stopped Rutledge’s Plan At The G20 Summit

President Sutton Saw Right Through Rutledge’s Stated Reasons For The Attack

President Sutton (Viola Davis plays the movie’s action hero, for the first time in such a role) initially tried to bring Han Min-Seo, Prime Minister Oliver Everett and IMF director Emma Romano to safety with Agent Ruiz, but it became immediately clear she had to face off Rutledge if she wanted to keep her family safe. However, meeting with Rutledge gave her all the information Danielle needed to understand their direct connection, having been on the ground during the same mission, and without it, it would have been impossible to reveal who was the real mastermind behind the attack.

President Sutton recognized right away how Rutledge’s military past had scarred him, hoping that similarity would persuade him to do the right thing. When Rutledge put Derek in danger by shooting at him, it also became evident that despite both Derek and Treasury Secretary Joanna Worth being hostages in front of her, Joanna was never truly threatened by Rutledge. Joanna Worth pocketing the crypto wallet in the chaos of the fight and choosing that location for the G20 summit inevitably proved her involvement, making it possible for President Sutton to use the wallet to get to Rutledge and save Serena.

Rutledge & His Group’s Motivations For The G20 Attack Explained

Their Greed & Vindictive Goals Motivated The Attack At The Summit

Rutledge’s lies made it seem like his group’s intentions had everything to do with uncovering how President Sutton’s Together Plan aimed to impoverish ordinary people in rich countries instead of helping those in the Global South, but the main objective of his plan was always to make himself and his group richer through the markets crashing. At the same time, there was a reason motivating his choice to attack Sutton’s plan specifically and not someone else’s, and it had everything to do with the friends who died protecting Sutton’s convoy before she became president and was in the military.

While Rutledge’s reasons were deeply personal, the rest of G20’s cast of characters had different motives, such as Agent Darden’s blind belief in Rutledge’s tales that Sutton’s plan would have betrayed ordinary Americans by focusing on foreign aid. The treasury secretary’s involvement nonetheless hid another reason, which was Joanna Worth’s belief that Sutton had stolen her place as US president, making her organization of the terrorist attack an act of revenge.

President Danielle Sutton Was Betrayed By Her Closest Ally

Joanna Worth’s involvement was only discovered as Rutledge was about to escape with Serena Sutton, but her pocketing the crypto wallet revealed to President Sutton everything she needed to know. While Rutledge might have been the face of G20’s terrorist attack, Joanna Worth was the mastermind behind it, as without her, Rutledge’s group wouldn’t have been selected as additional security, nor that hotel would have been chosen as the place for the G20 summit.

G20 only briefly teased potential animosity between Joanna Worth and President Sutton when the latter mentioned the cutthroat presidential campaign that was fought between them in the beginning. However, nothing else could have foreshadowed the insider behind the plot would have been the treasury secretary, especially as Agent Darden was already part of it. Still, the fact that the attack wouldn’t have been possible without Joanna Worth getting people with grievances against Sutton like Darden and Rutledge in touch with each other made her the main enabler of the whole plan.

Why Getting Oliver Everett & Elena Romano Out Was Key To President Sutton’s Plan

Serena Sent The Email To The VP But The Two Needed To Get The Full Plan Out

The G20 leaders and everyone in the hotel being cut off from the outside made Rutledge’s group the only ones able to send their deepfake videos out to control the narrative, making it impossible for the governments outside to coordinate a response that wouldn’t have endangered those inside. Serena Sutton’s email to the agents back home and the vice president got some information out, but it was not enough to be actionable, and the connection couldn’t be established again as Serena and Demetrius were on the run.

This made Elena Romano and UK Prime Minister Oliver Everett’s reckless drive of the Beast towards the gates of the hotel extremely important. Having spent the best part of the evening following President Sutton, they knew they could trust her and her plan. While the missiles they were being chased from almost blew them up, their eventually getting in front of their allies saved their lives and those of all inside the hotel, because they could share President Sutton’s plan with Vice President Moseley and CIA director Mikkelson.

The True Message of G20’s Ending Explained

Like in the best action movies, collaboration among unlikely allies against a common enemy is what often saves the day. This was also a core theme of G20, as the reason why the world leaders were in danger had everything to do with President Sutton being betrayed by her treasury secretary who wanted revenge against her. President Sutton made a point of highlighting community when she chose to save Melokuhle, Lesedi and the other hostages because it was the right thing to do, having the opportunity to do so then and there.

The overarching message appeared in President Sutton’s Together Plan and in the inevitable camaraderie that the situation created among those in Sutton’s group. Indeed, if President Sutton and Elena Romano couldn’t stand Prime Minister Everett at the evening’s beginning, they were close allies by its end. Community was also in direct opposition to what Joanna Worth and Rutledge stood for, as they organized that attack to further their plans, greed, and grievances instead of thinking about who they were hurting directly and indirectly through their actions in G20.
