The Pitt Creator Explains Dana’s Exit In The Season 1 Finale

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Pitt season 1, episode 15!The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill has explained Dana’s (Katherine LaNasa) exit in the season 1 finale, and what it means for her possible appearance in season 2. Despite the many difficulties the characters in The Pitt have faced throughout the day, most doctors on duty are planning to keep pushing ahead, no matter what happens. However, after getting punched in the face by Doug Driscoll (Drew Powell), she slowly begins to question her role, ultimately deciding to leave at the end of season 1. She packs up images of her family, signaling she might not come back.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gemmill explained that Dana leaving in The Pitt season 1 is, in that moment, a permanent decision. The creator said that, if season 2 took place the next work day, she would not have shown up, emphasizing how quickly roles in the medical field can change. However, given her dedication to the job, he believes it would be hard for her to stay away forever, something that could be cause for her return in season 2. Check out what Gemmill had to say below:
Yeah, I was even thinking we should have had her flip him off, but that was the bridge too far. But I think Dana — I think the thing about this show is you should never get too comfortable with any one character because the nature of the business and the world is that life throws things at you unexpectedly and things can change in a heartbeat. So I think when Dana leaves, she’s very intent on leaving for good. That’s why she takes her photos. That’s why she doesn’t admit to Robby whether she’ll be back Monday. And I think she has to take some time and think about things. And I would guarantee if next season took place the next day that she wouldn’t be there. So when we do come back, we’ll have to see. But she’s a trooper and that place is her home and she’s kind of like the den mother. So I think it would be hard for her, difficult for her to stay away as well. But when she does come back, I imagine she would be a little bit different.
What Gemmmill’s Statement Means For Dana’s Future In The Pitt
She Might Still Have A Part To Play In Season 2
The Pitt season 1 ended with Dana, now dejected after the day’s events, seemingly ready to leave for good. However, before she does, she has a heartfelt conversation with Robby (Noah Wyle) about his mentor, Adamson, that could be a sign she’s not ready to throw in the towel just yet. Based on Gemmill’s statement, though, she’s going to need some time to really think about what her next step is going to be. While she might be quitting for right now, it doesn’t mean she’s gone for good.

As for details on The Pitt season 2, the show is expected to come back in January 2026, with Max hoping for the series to return yearly. This time around, the season will focus on a busy Fourth of July weekend, meaning more injuries for the team to deal with than ever before. Whether she can find that spark again remains to be seen.
Our Take On Dana’s Exit In The Pitt Season 1
How She Can Return In Season 2
Since Gemmill said Dana could come back in season 2, it seems like her exit in season 1 isn’t going to be the last of her appearances. If she does come back, she could return as a doctor, although it would make for a more dramatic storyline if she still wasn’t fully ready to commit to the job again. The Pitt season 2 could also see her return as a patient again, this time in a larger capacity, giving her a chance to return to the hospital and possibly come to terms with what happened in season 1.
