The cosmic trials of the Silver Surfer never seem to end, with the one-time herald of Galactus now called upon to defend the universe on a routine basis. Thankfully, Norrin Radd will have more power than ever in his next battle, as the Silver Surfer has claimed one of Marvel’s mightiest weapons, along with its dark powers, and an all new name in Marvel canon.

The revelations have arrived thanks to the opening pages of Storm #7, showing the book’s battle of gods is more cosmic than even the X-Men heroine realizes. In these same scenes which reveal the true cosmic link between Galactus and its own boss, it’s the changes made to the Silver Surfer that are going to be talked about most. So say goodbye to the Silver Surfer, Marvel fans, and feast your eyes on the smoking form of Silver Surfer Soot.

The Silver Surfer Soot Gets A Twilight Sword Upgrade

Apparently being called to aid his master Galactus, the Silver Surfer first seeks out the Twilight Sword of Surtur. But he does not seek to claim the weapon to use it in battle, as most champions would. Instead he slams the blade into his iconic surfboard, combining its energies with those he already posseses, mingling the Power Cosmic with the smoking destruction which created the “Blade of Doom.” And in that moment, the Silver Surfer Soot is born, a black and silver skeletal surfer, trailing black smoke through space.

Silver Surfer will make an explosive return to the big screen in the MCU’s Fantastic Four: First Steps with a new animation showing off his potential!

The images above paint the entirety of the prologue, tantalizing readers with a larger battle still to come. Regardless, the birth of the Silver Surfer Soot will be what’s remembered. MCU fans will know the smoldering Twilight Sword as the weapon sought after and attained by the demonic Surtur, used to destroy Asgard in the closing scenes of Thor: Ragnarok. The comic version is a bit different, but with the power to cut down the World Tree itself, it’s a power unlike any the Surfer has wielded previously.

Note: The Twilight Sword has most recently been in the possession of Beta Ray Bill, who claimed it to defend multiple cosmic threats, starting with the destruction of Surtur, all the way up to the God of Hammers.

While this transformation is a gamechanger on its own, the new title and form taken by Norrin Radd also raises some important questions. For those wondering if this power-up is a permanent one, that seems unlikely. With both the Power Cosmic and the power to, arguably, destroy beings of the cosmic order, this combination could render Silver Surfer closer to Galactus than either would wish. Could this evolution or new identity help shed light on the coming Death of The Silver Surfer storyline, as well? Here’s hoping.

For now, fans can only enjoy the promised fight on the way, allowing a being as noble and heroic as the Silver Surf–the Silver Surfer Soot to wage war in new ways. The visuals of a smoke-trailing Surfer are potent on their own, but how the power of the Twilight Sword can be made manifest is a total mystery.

Storm #7 is available now from Marvel Comics.
