Quantumania’ at the Box Office as Digital Debut Looms

Mere days before it debuts on PVOD platforms, Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World has passed what will likely be its final box office milestone. Remarkably, the movie still hasn’t passed the $200 million mark domestically. This wouldn’t have made much difference to its final haul, but for a project of this magnitude to fail to hit even $200 million domestically doesn’t make for great optics. As it is, it was barely able to scrape past the $400 million mark worldwide — this is often considered the benchmark for success for movies this size.
With $199.9 million domestically and another $ million from overseas markets, Brave New World has hit a cumulative global total of around $415 million. This puts it around $300 million shy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s lifetime global gross from over a decade ago, and around $700 million short of Captain America: Civil War’s lifetime haul from 2016. The only Captain America movie that it was able to pass was the first one. But we all know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still establishing itself back then; plus, were inflation to be taken into account, there wouldn’t be much of a difference in the number of footfalls that both movies witnessed.
All in all, Brave New World cannot be classified as a success, especially when you consider the landmark performance of Marvel’s last film, Deadpool & Wolverine. But it’s quickly becoming clear that the once-unbeatable franchise isn’t as teflon-coated as it once was. Not every movie that it puts out is guaranteed to hit a certain figure; Brave New World remains one of the lowest-grossing MCU movies ever made. During its run, it was able to out-perform only the unremarkable MCU titles, such as The Marvels, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Eternals.
‘Brave New World’ Won’t Pass a Couple of Superhero Under-Performers
Produced on a reported budget of $180 million, the movie will ultimately fall short of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which debuted mid-pandemic and did the heavy-lifting of introducing an entirely new character. More worryingly, it’ll also fall short of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which also holds the unenviable distinction of being the lowest-rated MCU movie on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Julius Onah and starring Anthony Mackie, Brave New World is currently hanging on for dear life, just one point above it. You can watch the film in theaters, or wait for it to hit PVOD this week. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
