I’m So Disappointed That Outlander Season 8 Is Cutting This Character After Their Beautiful Season 7 Moment

Outlander season 8 won’t bring back one of its characters, despite the fact that they should technically be a part of the upcoming story. The upcoming final season will be based largely on Diana Gabaldon’s ninth Outlander book, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. However, since the author hasn’t yet published her tenth and final book in the series, Starz has to make significant changes to wrap up its version of the story. This apparently means cutting characters like Jenny Murray.

Jenny, Jamie’s sister, made a return appearance in Outlander season 7 when Jamie and Claire made a trip to Scotland. This character had previously been played by Laura Donnelly, who made her final appearance in Outlander season 3 when the Frasers first headed out for the Americas. In season 7, Jenny was played by Kristin Atherton since Donnelly could not return to the role. Atherton gave a great performance, and seeing any version of Jenny return to the screen was a joy. Unfortunately, it seems we have seen the last of this character.

Jenny recast in Outlander

In the Outlander books, Jenny moved to North Carolina with Jamie and Claire after her husband died in Scotland. However, in Outlander season 7, Atherton’s Jenny turned down Jamie’s invitation to return to America with him. She said she may join them at Fraser’s Ridge eventually but wasn’t quite ready yet. Given this statement, there was hope that Outlander season 8 would bring this character back and realign her story with that of the books. However, it has already been confirmed that Jenny’s season 7 return was the end of her on-screen story.

Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts confirmed that Jenny will not be in Outlander season 8, stating that “nothing that doesn’t affect Jamie and Claire gets in.” Since Jenny’s presence in Fraser’s Ridge isn’t necessary for the show to wrap up Jamie and Claire’s story, it isn’t going to be happening. This is a bit of a disappointment, especially after Jenny’s heartwarming moment with Ian at Lallybroch’s cemetery.

Jenny’s Absence Is Disappointing After Her Beautiful Graveyard Scene In Season 7

This Character Still Has So Much Potential

Jenny Fraser Murray with Jamie, Claire & Young Ian in Outlander 709

Recastings are never easy, but Atherton proved herself a suitable replacement for Donnelly during her graveyard scene in Outlander season 7. Jenny had led Ian to the Lallybroch cemetery following their chat about Rachel Hunter back in the Colonies, and she showed him a grave she had established for Iseabaìl. This was Ian’s infant daughter, who had died in North Carolina and whom Jenny had never had a chance to meet. The grave was empty, but Jenny knew that a part of the girl’s soul still belonged at Lallybroch. It was a touching tribute and a beautiful moment for Outlander.

After this sweet moment between Jenny and Ian, it would have been nice to see mother and son again reunited in the Colonies.

After this sweet moment between Jenny and Ian, it would have been nice to see mother and son again reunited in the Colonies. Ian and Rachel have a son on the way, and it would have been fitting for Jenny to be present to watch their family grow. Unfortunately, it’s not in the cards for Outlander season 8. People looking for this sort of satisfying resolution for Jenny’s character will have to read the Outlander books instead.
