Born Again Episode 9 Ends The Season On A High With 21 MCU Easter Eggs and Marvel Netflix References

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again episode 9
Daredevil: Born Again episode 9 contains some of the show’s best MCU Easter eggs and Netflix references. The culmination of Matt Murdock’s return as Daredevil and Wilson Fisk cementing his power as New York’s mayor, the finale of Daredevil: Born Again ends on a major cliffhanger, one that sets up a very exciting Daredevil: Born Again season 2. While the series has had some great ties and connections, some of my favorite references have been saved for last.
In Daredevil: Born Again episode 9, Fisk’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force is leading the charge as Mayor Fisk declares martial law, while Frank Castle’s Punisher and Karen Page return to help a wounded Matt Murdock. The episode also sets the stage for New York’s future, as the war against all New York vigilantes truly begins. To that end, here are all the biggest MCU Easter eggs and references in Daredevil: Born Again episode 9.
All The Best MCU Easter Eggs and Netflix References in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 9
Avocados at Law, Punisher’s Coffee, A Thousand Suns, and More
- Agent Nadeem and Fisk’s Acquittal – A flashback to Vanessa hiring Bullseye to kill Foggy Nelson confirms that Fisk was eventually acquitted due to the corruption of the FBI in Daredevil season 3. There’s also a reference to Agent Ray Nadeem, a major player in the FBI who eventually helped Daredevil go after Fisk.
- The Red Hook Truth – Red Hook is revealed to be a free port based on an old charter, explaining why Vanessa and Wilson Fisk are so interested in the area as a means to create their own free state. Likewise, Foggy’s discovery of this truth explains why Vanessa had him marked for death.
- Fisk’s White Suit Continues – Even after the Black and White Ball, Fisk continues to wear a white suit in Daredevil: Born Again episode 9, signifying his return to form as the Kingpin.
- City-Wide Lockdown Thanks To Bullseye – Fisk orders a city-wide lockdown of New York due to Bullseye’s attack, mirroring recent Daredevil comics when Bullseye began indiscriminately killing civilians, forcing a major citywide lockdown with New Yorkers fearing to leave their homes.
- “Always The Kingpin” – Even with his last breaths, Commissioner Gallo has consistently been the one who’s vocally referred to Fisk as “The Kingpin”, confirming he’s always known Fisk could never change his darker nature.
- Pym van Dyne – Right before power is shut down for the entire city, an ad for Hope van Dyne’s company in New York can be seen, researching all kinds of ways to improve the world using Pym Particles.
- “Got a Phonecall” – Frank Castle arrives to help Matt Murdock in Daredevil: Born Again episode 9, saying that he got a phone call and changed his mind about giving Daredevil a hand.
- “Hey Red” – Punisher calls Matt “Red”, just like he did in the series’ fourth episode and in the original Netflix series.
- Cole North’s Skull Vest – Cole North is shown wearing Frank Castle’s Punisher skull in Daredevil: Born Again’s finale, confirming that he was the one who killed White Tiger at the end of Daredevil: Born Again episode 3.
- Frank’s Love of Coffee – Frank makes more than a few references to wanting a good cup of coffee in Daredevil: Born Again episode 9, connecting to his established love of coffee in his original Netflix show.
- “Inspector Gadget Bull****” – Frank says he has no patience for Daredevil’s “Inspector Gadget Bull****” when talking about Matt’s billy clubs, while also referencing the classic animated series and live-action Disney films.
- A Darkly Familiar Vigilante Mask – During the city’s lockdown, two of Fisk’s AVTF officers kill a young looter, “justifying” it by putting a mask over his head after the fact. Notably, the mask in question looks a lot like Matt Murdock’s original black mask before he got the red suit and horns.
- Frank and Karen’s Heartbeats – While talking to Karen, Matt confirms he was able to hear both her and Frank’s rising heartbeats, a reference to their potential romance that was teased in the original Netflix series. However, Matt also confirms Karen’s heartbeat rose when she saw him too, so perhaps a love triangle could be established in future episodes.
- Avocados at Law – Looking through Foggy’s old belongings, Matt finds a plaque that reads “Avocados at Law”, a reference to the original Netflix series when Matt and Foggy first met as roommates, a running joke they formed when a drunk Foggy mistakenly said “avocados” instead of “abogados”, which is Spanish for “lawyers”.
- A Thousand Suns – Karen and Matt call back to the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil when Matt told her what his vision was like, referring to a “city on fire by a thousand suns”.
- “We Need An Army” – Karen convinces Daredevil to bide his time and come up with a better way of saving the city, and Matt confirms they “need an army”. This sets up a very exciting future for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, one that could feature many more New York MCU vigilantes beyond the allies who are shown at the finale’s end.
- Captured Vigilantes – The end of Daredevil: Born Again episode 9 confirms Fisk already has vigilantes in cages, including The Punisher, who was beaten by his own AVTF “fanboys” and Jack Duquesne’s Swordsman.
- Rabbit in a Snowstorm – Fisk and Vanessa celebrate their victory over dinner, which is notably in front of Rabbit in a Snowstorm, the iconic painting that first brought them together in the original Netflix series and was stained by blood at the end of Daredevil season 3.
- Angela Del Toro – Angela Del Toro is shown watching AVTF officers during the city’s martial law, potentially teasing a future where she takes up her uncle’s mantle as the second White Tiger, just like in the original comics.
- A City Without Fear – Daredevil confirms that he and his allies will help New York become “A City Without Fear”, connecting to Daredevil’s classic name as “The Man Without Fear” both in the MCU and in the original Marvel Comics.
- Setting Up Punisher’s Spin-Off – Daredevil: Born Again’s finale has a post-credits scene, one that sets up Punisher’s upcoming Special Presentation by having Frank escape Fisk’s custody.
