What did Wendy’s tweet about Katy Perry?
Wendy’s stirred controversy online after taking a series of jabs at Katy Perry following her brief spaceflight with Blue Origin. The fast-food chain posted several sarcastic remarks targeting Perry’s journey into space.
Following Perry’s return, Pop Crave posted, “Katy Perry has returned from space,” along with a photo of her in a space suit. Wendy’s official account replied, “Can we send her back,” a jab that quickly sparked reactions across social media. The trolling continued. When a photo circulated of Perry kissing the ground after landing, Wendy’s retweeted it with the caption, “I kissed the ground and I liked it,” referencing her 2008 hit single.
When another user joked about Perry’s lyrics, Wendy’s joked again: “Now she knows what it’s like to be a plastic bag floating in the wind,” referencing to the opening of her song “Firework.” They followed up with, “When we said women in STEM this isn’t what we meant.”
The jokes escalated further when someone noted that Perry was only in space for 10 minutes. Wendy’s corrected them, saying, “Don’t short change her, it was 11 minutes.” Another reply added, “Good one Wendy,” to which the account responded, “I’m a woman send me to space.”
Reactions to the commentary were mixed. While many users praised the fast-food brand for its humor, others criticized the posts as harsh.
Perry had joined a crew that included Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn. The six women were part of the first all-female mission in over 60 years, launched by Jeff Bezos’s company Blue Origin. The trip lasted around 11 minutes.
