Jason Momoa Just Hit a Massive Box Office Milestone Thanks to ‘A Minecraft Movie’

Had anyone predicted that Jason Momoa would one day be known for his comedic roles in big-budget tent pole films, especially after his breakout role as the vile Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones, they’d have been laughed out of the room. But here we are now, with Momoa having delivered A Minecraft Movie, yet another hit film in which he isn’t playing the brooding action hero that he was once predicted to become. In fact, this is the third major franchise film of his career, following his two Aquaman movies and Fast X; and this is if you ignore his failed Conan the Barbarian reboot and the first Dune.
Thanks to these recent hits, Momoa’s career box office haul has now passed the $5 billion mark worldwide. His biggest hit remains the first Aquaman movie, which grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide. A Minecraft Movie recently overtook the $439 million lifetime global haul of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. With over $550 million worldwide, it’s his fifth-biggest hit. This weekend, the movie will likely overtake the $655 million global haul of Justice League, which under-performed theatrically after a difficult post-production in 2017. Momoa also played the villain in Fast X, which made more than $700 million globally a couple of years ago. He’s set to reprise his role in a follow-up.
He’s also set to continue his successful collaboration with Warner Bros. with upcoming roles in Dune: Messiah and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. This would mark his second appearance as the swordsmaster Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune series; he sat out Dune: Part Two, which made over $700 million worldwide. And after playing Aquaman in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe, he’s set to play Lobo in James Gunn‘s DC Universe, which will take off this year with Superman.
Can ‘A Minecraft Movie’ Become Momoa’s Second Billion-Dollar Hit?
Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie also features Jack Black, whose lifetime box office has also benefited from its success. Movies featuring Black have now grossed a combined total of over $10 billion worldwide. Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie opened to mixed reviews, but an incredible audience response. Even though it sits at a “rotten” 46% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an excellent 87% audience score on the platform. All that remains to be seen now is if it has the goodwill to pass the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. You can watch A Minecraft Movie in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
