The fourth season of Netflix’s The Witcher is facing different challenges due to some key changes, and one about Geralt (Liam Hemsworth) and Ciri (Freya Allan) puts more pressure on one key but underused character in the show’s final season. The Witcher had a strong start on Netflix in 2019, becoming one of the platform’s most popular shows. However, The Witcher has faced a lot of criticism since season 2, and though season 3 tried to fix some of the show’s biggest mistakes, there’s now a lot of pressure on season 4.

The Witcher season 4 will see the debut of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, a new Vesemir actor, and some of the books’ darkest storylines. At the end of The Witcher season 3, Ciri, Geralt, and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) were separated again, with Ciri joining the Rats, Geralt setting out with Jaskier and Milva to find Ciri, and Yennefer forming the Lodge of Sorceresses. Unfortunately, season 4 will continue one of the show’s biggest mistakes with Geralt and Ciri, which, in turn, puts a lot of pressure on Yennefer in the final seasons.

Geralt & Ciri’s Distance In The Witcher Season 4 Will Make It Harder To Get Their Dynamic Right In Season 5

Unfortunately, Ciri & Geralt Won’t Be Together In Season 4

One of the biggest criticisms Netflix’s The Witcher has faced is that Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer haven’t had much time together, despite being the core characters of the show. Season 1 followed their stories separately, with only Geralt and Yennefer meeting and Geralt and Ciri finally finding each other in the season’s final scene. Season 2 built the relationship between Geralt and Ciri, but left the latter’s dynamic with Yennefer aside as it turned the latter into an antagonist for most of the season.

Freya Allan revealed that she has no scenes with Hemsworth in The Witcher season 4, so Ciri will be on her own path.

The Witcher season 3 tried to fix this by keeping the three of them together throughout most episodes, but their “family bond” felt forced. As mentioned above, by the end of season 3, Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer were separated again, and unfortunately, it will continue that way for two characters. Speaking to Screen Rant at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, Allan revealed that she has no scenes with Hemsworth in The Witcher season 4, so Ciri will be on her own path.

While this will give Hemsworth space to build his own version of Geralt without the pressure of his dynamic with other characters, his chemistry with Allan can make or break his performance. As they won’t be sharing scenes in season 4, The Witcher only has one more season to get the dynamic between Ciri and Hemsworth’s Geralt right, which, in turn, puts more pressure on Yennefer.

The Witcher’s Geralt & Ciri Change Puts More Pressure On Yennefer Going Forward

Yennefer & Ciri’s Bond Is More Important Than Ever

Geralt and Ciri’s bond was built in The Witcher season 2, when he trained her and took her with him to Kaer Morhen. Season 2 could have also seen Ciri and Yennefer building the daughter/mother bond we all expected, but instead, their dynamic was saved for the next season. Ciri, Yennefer, and Geralt spend the early part of season 3 together, living as a family, with Yennefer training Ciri and teaching her how to better control her powers. By the time they had to part ways, Yennefer acknowledged Ciri as her daughter.

Yennefer and Ciri will now carry the weight of creating the familiarity of past seasons.

Ciri and Yennfer’s reunion in The Witcher season 4 (if it’s meant to happen, of course) won’t feel strange as these two already have an established chemistry, but this also makes it even more important for season 5. Yennefer and Ciri will now carry the weight of creating the familiarity of past seasons, which is going to be key as Hemsworth’s Geralt builts his dynamic with the rest of the characters – however, it’s unknown if Ciri will reunite with Yennefer in season 4, but if not, it’s even more pressure for the characters and the final season.

Yennefer Could Finally Get The Attention She Deserves In Seasons 4 & 5 After Being Underused

Yennefer Deserves A Big Role In The Witcher’s Final Seasons

Despite the changes Netflix’s The Witcher has made to Yennefer so far, she might be on her way to finally getting the role and attention she deserves in the show’s final seasons. In the books, after the Thanedd Coup, Yennefer is captured and tortured by Vilgefortz and meets Leo Bonhart. Yennefer learns about what Bonhart has done to Ciri, and later, she, along with Geralt, is captured by the White Flame, who tries to make them kill themselves. Surely, the show might change Yennefer’s fate, but either way, she’s set up to have a bigger role in seasons 4 and 5.

The Witcher season 3 will change the course of Yennefer’s story, and here are the biggest things that happen to her after the events of season 3.

While this will be good for Yennefer, who has been underused so far, it’s a lot of pressure on a character who hasn’t been given the space and attention she deserves. The Witcher’s challenges for season 4 and 5 are a lot bigger than just a new actor playing Geralt, as Yennefer now also has a lot of weight on her shoulders, but it could be beneficial to her.
